As of the election, 6 @australianlabor.bsky.social candidates have sent the same email while declining to support the minimum wage. My favourite part is when they claim "the government does not set the wages for people working in supported employment"

"Dear Shaun, Thank you for your email regarding wages and conditions in supported employment of people with a disability. The Albanese Labor Government is committed to supporting the fullest participation of all people with disability in the community. We want to ensure people with disability with high support needs, including the 16,000 people working in supported employment, continue to receive support to choose how and where they work. Labor is committed to evolving the supported employment sector to provide choice of employment options for people with disability, and this includes improving pathways to open employment for those who want to move into open employment. We developed and released a Supported Employment Plan in consultation with people with a disability, their families, employers and the state and territory governments. The plan includes a range of practical initiatives and actions, with a specific focus on employment for people with disability with high support needs. We have backed this plan with a $52 million Structural Adjustment Fund to assist the supported employment sector to evolve and offer a wider range of employment opportunities, as well as providing people with disability access to advocacy and information about employment rights and options. Through this investment, we are funding 63 organisations who employ people with a disability in supported employment to deliver better outcomes for their employees. The types of projects being funded include: funding organisations to hire staff with direct responsibilities for liaising with open employers to find suitable employment opportunities for people with disability; providing comprehensive paid training and industry placements for people with disability; and expanding the types of work and range of roles available supported employment workplaces." continued The Game of Thrones Shame Nun used as an alt text placeholder. The government does not set the wages for people working in supported employment. The independent industrial relations tribunal, the Fair Work Commission, is responsible for making, reviewing, and varying modern awards, including setting wage rates and classifications, through consultation with affected parties. The most recent review of the Supported Employment Services Award 2020 was handed down in December 2022 following extensive consultation over several years. We are also continuing public consultation on Disability Royal Commission recommendations related to supported employment. Labor wants to see high quality workplaces, and better pay and choice about employment opportunities for supported workers – and the actions we are taking will help achieve this. It is only under a Labor Government that progress will be made to evolve the supported employment sector and wages will continue to increase for people with disability in employment with high support needs.
