All of that plant material goes to feed a domesticated fungus, typically Leucocoprinus gongylophorus, which breaks the plant down to make 'gongylidia', specialized nutrient-rich fungal swellings.

The partnership is so deep these fungus can no longer produce fruiting bodies (mushrooms) for spores.
