“There are days we live as if death were nowhere in the background” 
From Blossoms Li-Young Lee From blossoms comes this brown paper bag of peaches we bought from the boy at the bend in the road where we turned toward signs painted Peaches. From laden boughs, from hands, from sweet fellowship in the bins, comes nectar at the roadside, succulent peaches we devour, dusty skin and all, comes the familiar dust of summer, dust we eat. O, to take what we love inside, to carry within us an orchard, to eat not only the skin, but the shade, not only the sugar, but the days, to hold the fruit in our hands, adore it, then bite into the round jubilance of peach. There are days we live as if death were nowhere in the background; from joy to joy to joy, from wing to wing, from blossom to blossom to impossible blossom, to sweet impossible blossom.

This shows the poem, Eating Together, by Li-Young Lee. In the steamer is the trout seasoned with slivers of ginger, two sprigs of green onion, and sesame oil. We shall eat it with rice for lunch, brothers, sister, my mother who will taste the sweet meat of the head, holding it between her fingers deftly, the way my father did weeks ago. Then he lay down to sleep like a snow-covered road winding through pines older than him, without any travelers, and lonely for no one. The is the cover of Li-Young Lee's book, Rose. The background is red. It says, Rose, in white letters across the top. There's a drawing of a faucet with an eye dripping out of it (or maybe it's a hook with an eye dangling from it). This is my version of Eating Together. For us, it was cheap pizza from the freezer, into the oven. Then card games around the table in the smallish kitchen, the aimless TV in the background. I was always singing, my siblings shushing me. But I don't remember my father telling me to be quiet. Not then. Not for that. Not like the quiet path that shushed him, years later, as he wandered back to the lawns and lakes of his childhood, forgetting his life piece by piece until there was nothing left but spark plugs and his army uniform, telling me the years had gone quickly and he'd never been a man to play cards. This shows a card game set-up on a table.
