"He wonders if shamans in Liangzhu, many thousands of years ago, were doing something similar to what he is doing now—whether their ancient star maps were a way of saying that the world, however chaotic and confusing, contained a pattern that humans could predict." www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

New piece at @newyorker.com by @afrawang.bsky.social on a visit to Liangzhu, which seems to be the Dali (c. 2008) of the vibe-coding world: "The town is hip, idyllic, contrarian, and increasingly known as an escape for workers burnt out by the grind of China’s booming tech industry."

See also the Shang Dynasty tomb of Fu Hao--the consort of King Wu Ding who was buried around 1200 BCE along with Liangzhu culture and Hongshan culture jade figures at least 1000 years old when she got them.
TIL Shuruk-Nahhunte, king of Elam (in modern-day Iran), who in 1160 BCE collected all of his war booty and put it on display at the temple of his god. Some of the material was 2,500+ years old *at that time*.

The British Museum's got nothing on Shuruk-Nahhunte.

One of the most successful recent ventures in China’s vibe-coding capital is an A.I. fortune-telling company that uses Chinese astrology. What can this tell us about the A.I. boom? www.newyorker.com/news/the-led...

A lot of the fun of reading about archaeology is hitting a weird cultural practise that we have next to no explanation for. Like this morning I was reading about large amounts of worked human bones that have been found at Liangzhu city dating from late Neolithic China, that have no obvious purpose.

Not beating the autism allegations today as I monologue about Liangzhu city to anyone who comes near.

Reading about the Liangzhu culture of late Neolithic China and dear god so many nationalistic claims that have been made about their society to try and push the origins of Chinese civilisation back to 5000 BCE with so little basis in archaeology.

it's also possible that the motif has its roots in earlier patterns present on Liangzhu vessels.
