Lifer alert! I finally saw my first Red-Headed Woodpeckers today. #LiferPie 🪶
2 woodpeckers on a dead tree. The top bird is white with black shoulders and tail, and a vibrant red head, face, and neck. The lower bird is similar but without the red, and is smaller. This bird has a worm in its bill

LIFER! One of my local birding white whales dropped into my yard yesterday: my first bay-breasted warbler! No pics – I was in a screen porch, but my daughter can vouch for my excitement. To honour the occasion here’s a sketch, using a black-throated green warbler photo I took as reference. #LiferPie

Well that’s cool. Pretty sure this is a Northern rough-winged swallow, which would make it an occasion for some #LiferPie. This location near Saskatoon has Bank, Tree, Barn, Cliff, Northern rough-winged swallows AND purple martins. NOT a safe place for bugs 😂
Long, sleek swallow with brown back and white chest, perched on a bare branch. Bird guide describes a “dingy” throat but that seems harsh.

I finally got to see an American bittern and I am over the moon!
I didn’t hear it as it didn’t sing or call at all, but it was still wonderful to watch this shy heron in the reeds… cooool!

LIFER!!! This weekend I lived out a longtime dream, of seeing a northern saw-whet owl and thus knocking the number 1 white whale from my life list – by attending two banding sessions in central Saskatchewan. I saw six owls, and got to hold two (one even pooped on me – blessed!) #birds #LiferPie

I encountered enough lifers on my Saskatchewan trip to need a whole pie, but this one was special. This Say's Phoebe was sitting on the chair in front of my Otentik in Rock Creek Campground in Grasslands National Park. It was backlit, so I didn't recognize it right away. #birds #LiferPie 🌿
