Dolly Parton, the iconic country music singer, posthumously accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Americana Honors & Awards in a pre-recorded video clip that was shared for the first time at the event on September 12, 2026. The video, recorded before her death, was played during the ceremony at the Ryman Auditorium, where Parton's appearance on screen caused the audience to gasp as they realized the award was being accepted posthumously. In the video, Parton expressed her gratitude for the honor, reflecting on her musical roots in Americana music and how it shaped her career. She mentioned growing up playing roots music in the Smoky Mountains and how it led her back to East Tennessee in 1997 to record her album 'Hungry Again,' which opened the door to a series of bluegrass and acoustic albums that transformed her career. Parton also thanked the Americana Music Association for recognizing her with the award, concluding with the heartfelt message, 'just know that I will always love you.' The ceremony also featured a performance of her song 'Coat of Many Colors' by Brandi Carlile and I'm with Her, introduced by Emmylou Harris. This tribute followed a wave of global tributes to Parton, including performances of her songs by Kacey Musgraves, Maisie Peters, Jack White, and Orville Peck. Additionally, the Nashville International Airport recently voted to rename itself in her honor, and her estate confirmed the inaugural DollyFest festival, which will celebrate her legacy instead of a traditional public memorial. Parton passed away in August 2026 after battling cancer, which she kept private to avoid causing concern among her fans. Her sister later revealed that Parton did not want people to be sad about her health struggles. The NME obituary for Parton described her as a unifying icon who embodied both qualities as a 'resplendent' figure in music and pop culture, stating that 'the world has become more divided since that set, but everyone will always love Dolly.'
