"At daylight the miserable man was carried to an oak..." (from the series Searching for California Hang Trees) lightjet print ----- [from the Smithsonian American Art Museum] ----- Through meticulous research, Gonzales-Day documented approximately 350 lynching incidents that occurred in California between 1850 and 1935, most of which involved victims of Mexican descent. To create the series Searching for California Hang Trees, the artist visited many of these sites and captured the likeness of trees that may have borne witness to these events. Gonzales-Day’s landscapes unearth traces of this little-known history.

I always thought this line was treated unfairly back in the day. Yes, the sculpt and paint on the smallest figures could have used some help for sure. But Spinmaster really went all out! I loved the diecast toys too. 2/5

We used to have drum scans made for murals using the Lightjet machines and the lab we used wouldn’t scan 35mm more than about 10” 300dpi. Genuine fractals would be used to interpolate. In the old days you wouldn’t optically print 35 much more than 11x14 without expecting consequences.

Btw we used a lab for digital output around 2000 to 2010 and we had Lightjet prints made instead of Cibachrome. That used lasers to burn image to RA4. Occasionally we’d do Durst Lamda prints or Fuji Frontier for small prints. I liked all these better than inkjets

these machines were expensive it was a big outlay for a small lab. with digital the same sort of thing happened with the Frontier machines and their Noritsu counterparts. in pro labs it was the Durst Lambda and the Lightjet machines that were like a half million bucks investment

Murals are ridiculous. They get so large you can’t do any retouching or edits. That one was a 4x5 chrome scanned at 26 feet at 300 dpi. There was another for that same exhibit that was 21 feet long. things have gotten easier with inkjet at 120 dpi rather than the Lightjet and Lambda printers

memory feed this a.m. had these snaps of exhibit prints for the "Look Again" historical photo exhibit from the collection. this exhibit was about analyzing historical images. Anyways, this one used a new printer with a movable head like the old Lightjet, but an inkjet direct print to 4x8 substrate
I had done these photos about a year or so earlier as part of a conservation survey of the cased images, and just came up with these views as a way to show the nature of the process. they worked for this exhibit though. these are inkjets prints mounted & corners wrapped around gatorboard for a cleaner look. this an inkjet printed directly to the substrate so no mounting is needed. there's a Gatorboard product called "zebra board" that has a clay coated white paper surface for printing on black stock. the edges are trimmed out with this metal border material cut to fit. the original print is very close to this color here. that is a scene of the Bostian Bridge train wreck which was a big one near Statesville in 1890s. another inkjet direct to the substrate. that one is from Cherokee. the photographer Nance Brock from Asheville would take these for the Hall of History (NCMOH early days). the 8x10 contact prints are in museum collection, UNC's NC Collection has his glass plates and many of the prints negs can be found there.
