Critics slam renewables for land use but ignore fossil fuels' huge impact.

Germany's Hambach lignite mine: 85 sq km pit, 300m deep, snapped from ISS.

My first ever energy research protect professionally was on the externalities of lignite. In short: they are very significant!

For the first time, solar produced more electricity than lignite in Germany for the first half of the year. 60% of power generation was renewable.
Im ersten Halbjahr 2025 war Wind die stärkste Stromquelle in Deutschland. Solar hat erstmals die Braunkohle überholt und ist auf Platz zwei gelandet.

Bike lanes and nuclear power plants should both be easier to permit than open pit lignite mines.

Let's talk about how REPUBLICANS KILLED TEXAS COAL with deregulation.

Texas has vast fields of lignite coal, enough to meet Texas's power needs for hundreds of years, so long as you don't care about air pollution or climate change.

But the number of coal-fired power power plants is dwindling...

German electricity generation mix, 1990-2024.
After the nuclear exit, are they using more coal*? No, less.
More natural gas then? No, less.
Could they have used even less coal and gas if they hadn't shut down nuclear? Yes.

“Geiseltalsee is Germany's largest artificial lake, created from a former lignite mine. Reaching depths of approximately 80 metres, it hides submerged forests, roads and concrete structures beneath crystal-clear freshwater.”
