Quite an arrival - I feel like the slightly daunted heroine of a nineteenth-century gothic novel... Looking forward to sharing more over the next few days, from this workshop hosted by Linnaeus University.

TIL that Carl Linnaeus based most of his biological classification system on one he learned from the northern Scandinavian Indigenous Lapp people.

In Uppsala for #eseh2025. Two cafés named after Carl Linnaeus (Linné) side by side… on Linnaeus Street.
Across the road: Carl the Hairdresser and his cockatoo lamp.

Google's wonderful AI believes that the Canada Goose, which was described by Linnaeus, was named after a random dude named John Canada.

LINNAEUS: OK let's go over your proposed taxonomy
DAVE, FRIEND OF LINNAEUS: Dog for sure
LINNAEUS: A little rudimentary but we can work with that
DAVE: And then next to that are drums and animals in one group
LINNAEUS: Dave, what the fuck

The gravestone of the Carl Linnaeus in the Uppsala Cathedral. It is made of Ordovician limestone. Here I've found several cephalopods. According to Alexander Pohl these are: i) a lituitid Ancistroceras; ii) endoceratid; and iii) orthoceratid.

Although we teach Linnaean classification to students from high school to PhD, Linnaeus’ work forms one of the 18th-century roots of modern scientific racism.

Don't teach one without the other, especially when the Linnaeus Society has such good teaching tools. 🧪🦠 www.linnean.org/learning/who...
