Superb weather today in NE Scotland. 12 Long-tailed Duck, 4 Slavonian Grebe and a Basking Shark off Golspie, 52 Scaup, 15 Barnacle Geese + 120+ Whooper Swan Loch Eye, 400+ Eider at Littleferry and great views of several Yellowhammer #birdingscotland #ukbirding

15 April 1746: Government highlanders led by Ensign John Mackay defeated a larger Jacobite force under George Mackenzie, Earl of Cromartie, near Littleferry in Sutherland. Cromartie had received orders to march and reinforce Charles Edward Stuart at Culloden.

Thank-you! I just looked up Littleferry, and that’s close to Dingwall and Dornoch where I took my father to visit for his bucket list trip to the UK as his mum’s ancestors came from there. 🩷

Memorial to the Battle of Littleferry, 15 April 1746, unveiled in April 2022. Littleferry was an important event, though overshadowed by the climactic Battle of Culloden, fifty miles further south, the following day.

On This Day In 1746: The Battle of Littleferry was a skirmish during the Jacobite Rising of 1745, near Golspie, Scotland. Government-aligned local militia, including Sutherland and Mackay clansmen, ambushed and defeated a Jacobite force led by the Earl of Cromartie.
