This evening we visited the park dedicated to the memory of Detroit activist, mom, and martyr Viola Liuzzo.

She went down to Selma to march and organize for civil rights, and the KKK murdered her for it.

The park is just a couple miles from my house. I had to see it.

When racists killed Mickey Schwerner, James Chaney and Andrew Goodman in 1964, they burned their station wagon but left it just off a road where it was easily found.

When racists killed Viola Liuzzo, they advertised her shot-up car for sale, promoting it as a possible tourist attraction.
ICE's decision to just leave cars abandoned in the roads is one of those dystopian things that makes you recoil in shock when you encounter it.
A legal asylum-seeker who works at Chipotle and plays music at a church in Maine went missing. His pastor searched and searched, eventually finding his abandoned car with the keys on the floor.

ICE grabbed him. No criminal record. No explanation.

Viola Liuzzo. Jim Reeb. Andrew Goodman. Mickey Schwerner. William Lewis Moore. American white supremacists have a long history of murdering white people who break ranks.
They are telling us in unequivocal terms that if you show solidarity with immigrants who are in the literal crosshairs of Trump/MAGA, you're risking a death sentence.

An undercover informant working for the FBI was in the car that pursued Liuzzo. To deflect attention, J. Edgar Hoover made defamatory statements about her. In 1983, Liuzzo’s family learned of the FBI’s involvement and sued the agency for failing to prevent her death and for false accusations. /end

To deflect attention from the FBI's complicity, Hoover started a smear campaign against Liuzzo. I mean this is nothing new -- Hoover tried to get King to KILL HIMSELF. So of course Liuzzo was -- take your pick -- a drug addict, bad mother, having affairs with Black men. ALL LIES.

And we are not "centering whiteness" by honoring folks like John Brown or Viola Liuzzo. They counted the cost and laid down their lives for the struggle just like one of my great-grandfathers did.

This is why we need A People's History of Humanity (Zinn) instead of the propaganda and lies.

More than that, the FBI paid tons of informants who infiltrated the Klan.

For one famous example, Gary Thomas Rowe was a paid FBI informant who was present at the murder of Viola Liuzzo.

But there were so many more. By one estimate, in 1965 a full 15% of the Mississippi KKK were paid informants.
When is the FBI going to be indicted for "secretly funding" the Black Panthers and the Weather Underground?

The attempt to eradicate and erase the sacrifice of Mrs. Liuzzo is but another attempt to disappear the best of America's allies in the struggle for freedom and justice.

Among many honors, Mrs. Liuzzo was awarded a degree from Wayne State University.

Rest in peace, power and paradise, Queen.

Dr. King asked people who believed in justice to come to Selma. Mrs. Liuzzo, a mother with five children, was so moved she drove alone from Detroit to Selma. Liuzzo, growing up in GA +TN, knew the danger of the south. She pushed through her fear to fight for justice.

Remembering Violet Liuzzo.
Remembering James Reeb.

Remembering Edmund Pettus. Remembering George Wallace.
Remembering the nameless AL troopers & cops.

Selma, 60 years ago today. Remembering, never returning.

In return local racists in Detroit burned a cross on their lawn, shot up their house, the Liuzzo children were called "n****r lovers," hate mail, death threats were so bad Mr. Liuzzo had to hire security to protect his home and family. But wait there's more.

I'm not here to defend white people - many of whom were perfectly happy to participate in the oppression of Black people and other POC.

I'm just... it's not hard to see the parallels between Renee Good and Viola Liuzzo.

All whiteness is conditional.

Mrs. Viola Liuzzo left 5 kids to travel to the deep south to drive Black voters to the polls and was shot and killed by other Americans.
