just try it. You don't have to commit to anything. You don't have to run it full-time. If you run it off a LiveUSB you don't even have to make changes to your computer. Just trying it goes a long way towards dispelling the imposing aura the OS has.

That said, Linux Mint is what I usually recommend for people who just want to switch away from Windows. You can try it on a LiveUSB without committing to it.

If you're bored today and have been getting annoyed with Windows, just pop Linux onto a LiveUSB and play with it. You don't need to install it or anything, just play around, try different distros and desktops. :3

Best thing you can do is download a LiveUSB and put it on a USB drive and reboot and see if you like it. I personally use Debian on my laptop.
The benefit of a LiveUSB is that it won't change anything on your laptop unless you decide to fully commit.

fumbled the fstab? your computer will fail quickly with an error saying what went wrong (if you removed "silent" on grub or whatever) but you can fix your blunder with a liveusb. if the same error of being unable to find a partition happened on windows you'd be out of luck.

I'm looking at the liveusb, and it's gorgeous, but there is no installer.
I looked on their forum, someone asked if you could install Gentoo from the liveusb, and all they said was yes, not how to smh

And my flash drive is sitting at home, so I can't do a livecd/liveusb image to recover, so I guess I get to try again tomorrow.
I'm not sure how I'll shrink my initramfs, or else I guess I'll try to resize the /boot partition, but whew that'd be spicy.

Most popular distros have LiveUSB support and can boot to a usable desktop, it really depends on what environment you prefer and what you want pre-installed. Setting that up with a writable partition could work reasonably well

then you install it and if you use a liveusb image you managed to hunt down it assumes you want the same interface for an install so it doesn't even ask you. vim comes preinstalled but it's named vi and calling vim from the shell does nothing. just utterly embarrassing design decisions out the gate

I fucked up BAD
went and booted a LiveUSB to resize my root parition (had an unused extra 60GB), but I forgot KDE will sleep after 10 minutes by default and I left the room. PC slept and corrupted my partitions and while btrfs was able to get /home accessable, it was still not bootable...
