San Diego Dining Group Bringing Romanella Cucina Romana To Bay Park, Taking Over Former La Pastaia Space
Another restaurant shuffle is underway in San Diego’s Bay Park. Romanella Cucina Romana is set to debut this October, taking over the address most recently home to La Pastaia, which closed last month after just two years. The new concept comes from Sicilian-born local chef and restaurateur Vincenzo Loverso, whose portfolio includes downtown’s Greystone Steakhouse and Osteria Panevino, as well as Vincenzo Cucina and Lounge in Little Italy, where cheese wheel pasta and Aperol spritzes take center stage. Romanella promises an upscale yet family-friendly take on Italian dining, with promotional material teasing the tagline, “from Roma with love,” and describing the restaurant as a place “where every night feels like a celebration.” A menu has not yet been released, but pasta, hearty entrees, and traditional Roman-inspired flavors are expected. Loverso has built a long résumé in San Diego dining since relocating from New Jersey, where he first ran Grotta Azzurra. His ventures here have spanned from classic steakhouses to flashy Italian lounges, and Romanella is the latest in a string of openings, closings, and retools. The group behind these projects has developed a reputation in San Diego for frequently refreshing concepts and turning over spaces - a pattern that has drawn both curiosity and some skepticism in the city’s restaurant scene. Still, the team’s ability to repeatedly launch ambitious new restaurants keeps them at the center of the ever-evolving local dining conversation. Romanella Cucina Romana will open Wednesday, October 2, at 3055 Clairemont Drive in San Diego’s Bay Park neighborhood. Brisa Bar & Restaurant Brings Latin-Fusion Flair To San Diego's Little Italy
Brisa Latin Bar & Restaurant has soft opened in San Diego’s Little Italy, with its official grand opening set for April 10, transforming the former Zinqué space into a vibrant dining destination featuring a Latin-fusion menu crafted by consulting chef James Montejano. Brisa is the latest venture from chefs Marco Provino and Vincenzo Loverso of San Diego Dining Group. The concept introduces a Tulum-inspired flair to the Little Italy neighborhood, blending contemporary Latin cuisine with Japanese influences, crafted cocktails, and a boho-chic ambiance complete with a stylish patio lounge. The 3,000-square-foot space, previously home to Zinqué - a Los Angeles-based French bistro that quietly closed in October 2024 after five years - has been reimagined under the leadership of General Manager and Partner Jennifer Reinhart. Operating seven nights a week, Brisa offers dinner service with plans to introduce weekend brunch in the coming months. The menu, designed by Montejano, a veteran chef who previously served as corporate chef for San Diego Dining Group, showcases a fusion of Latin and Japanese flavors. Highlights include shared plates like the Crab Nopal Tostada with avocado-jalapeño crema ($21) and Tangerine Tempura Camarones with mandarin-chipotle sauce ($22), alongside sushi rolls such as the Brisa Roll with yellowtail and seared tuna ($20) and entrees like the 12oz Picanha Wagyu Steak with chimichurri ($49). The raw bar features Brisa Oysters with truffle caviar ($22), reflecting Montejano’s innovative approach to blending culinary traditions. San Diego Dining Group, led by Loverso, continues rapidly expanding in the local dining scene, with a portfolio that includes Greystone The Steakhouse, Osetra The Fishhouse, and the recently opened Romanisso in the Gaslamp. Loverso and Provino have a history of collaborations, having launched Rusticucina, Allegro, and Osteria Cotto e Mangiato, often partnering with restaurateurs like Antonino Cusimano and Alberto Mestre. Montejano’s involvement adds a layer of expertise, drawing on his experience with the group to create a menu that caters to Little Italy’s diverse, food-savvy crowd. Chef Montejano has worked all across California, including under renowned chef chef restaurateurs like Michael Mina. Locally, he's worked at Pampelmousse in Solana Beach, La Valencia Hotel, Cardiff Seaside Market, and most recently, L'Auberge Del Mar Resort. Little Italy’s dining scene has faced challenges recently, with the closure of the Little Italy Food Hall in February 2025, underscoring the competitive nature of the area. Brisa’s arrival follows the departure of Zinqué, which opened in 2019 as part of the AV8 mixed-use development but struggled to maintain its foothold amid shifting dining trends. Brisa aims to fill this gap with its vibrant atmosphere and eclectic menu, potentially benefiting from the area's high foot traffic. The restaurant’s boho-chic decor and patio lounge align with the neighborhood’s trendy vibe. Brisa is located at 2155 Kettner Boulevard in San Diego's Little Italy. Romanissimo Brings Traditional Italian Cuisine To San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter
San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter has welcomed a new addition to its dining scene with the opening of Romanissimo Cucina Italiana, a restaurant specializing in authentic Roman cuisine. The new concept replaces Saltwater Seafood & Steak, which closed earlier this year after nearly five years in business. Romanissimo comes from Vincenzo Loverso and Alessandro Minutella, seasoned restaurateurs behind Greystone The Steakhouse, Osetra The Fishhouse, Osteria Panevino, The Butcher’s Cut, and Vincenzo’s in Little Italy. The duo previously operated Saltwater under their San Diego Dining Group, but opted for a complete transformation of the space, pivoting from a seafood and steakhouse to a menu focused on regional Italian flavors. Romanissimo's menu highlights classic Roman-style dishes. Handmade pasta plays a starring role, with offerings like Radiatori al Sugo, featuring a short rib ragu and pecorino cheese, and Agnolotti, filled with beef cheek and served in brown butter and sage. For spice lovers, the Spaghetti Indiavolati delivers bold flavors with garlic, chili flakes, and a spicy tomato sauce. Pizza and "pinza" - a Roman-style flatbread - are also on offer, including La Mortadella, topped with pistachio pesto, smoked mozzarella, and arugula, and Diavola, featuring spicy salami and mozzarella. Seafood lovers can opt for the Salmone Affumicato, served with lemon caper sauce, or the Ostriche, Carciofi, e Gamberi, a dish of oysters, artichokes, shrimp, lemon, and chili sauce. For heartier main courses, Romanissimo presents Cotoletta alla Milanese, a breaded veal cutlet served with arugula and tomato, as well as Filetto di Manzo, a grilled filet mignon paired with porcini risotto and a red wine reduction. The transformation from Saltwater to Romanissimo marks a shift in culinary direction for the Gaslamp Quarter space. Originally home to Blue Point Coastal Cuisine, which operated for 24 years under the Cohn Restaurant Group, the location has long been a destination for upscale dining. With the transition to Romanissimo, Loverso and Minutella aim to bring the flavors of Rome to the heart of San Diego, following the success of Roman Wolves in Little Italy, another concept under their restaurant group. Romanissimo Cucina Italiana is now open at 565 Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter. For more information, visit romanissimosd.com and check out the launch menu below.

Saltwater Surf & Turf Restaurant Ending Run In San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter
After nearly five years of serving in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, Saltwater Seafood & Steak will close its doors, making way for a new Italian restaurant concept. The journey of Saltwater began in fall 2019, when Sicilian-born chefs and restaurateurs Vincenzo Loverso and Alessandro Minutella took over the space formerly occupied by Blue Point Coastal Cuisine, a staple of the Cohn Restaurant Group for 24 years. Loverso, a seasoned San Diego restaurateur, boasts ownership stakes in local favorites like Greystone The Steakhouse, Osetra The Fishhouse, Osteria Panevino, The Butcher’s Cut, Vincenzo’s in Little Italy, and others through various partnerships. Under the San Diego Dining Group, Loverso and Minutella opened Saltwater in early 2020, transforming the historic Blue Point location into a destination for seafood and steaks. Saltwater’s last day of service will be Monday, January 6, after which the space will undergo a complete redesign. The new Italian restaurant - name yet to be announced - will debut later this year, featuring a menu of traditional and modern Italian dishes complemented by a full bar. Saltwater is located at 565 Fifth Avenue in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter. For updates, visit saltwatersandiego.com. **_Originally published on January 6, 2025.  _**
