They loosely map to PCA's principal components, just because that initialises the first layout, but PaCMAP (and its child LocalMAP, which is what you're seeing in that prototype) is essentially running an attractive-repulsive force simulation in 2D, using forces determined by HD space

There are some updates in the past few months that improve it as LocalMAP (non-parameterized) and ParamRepulsor (parameterized, so better for neural net training), which makes me even more excited!
