Announcing localtime, a #QuartoPub extension for displaying times in the reader's local timezone e.g.

{{< localtime 2026-03-09 20:30 UTC >}} will render as 2026-03-09 21:30 for someone in CET.

Has nice formatting options, and automatically accounts for daylight saving.

I once worked at a place which had their servers using localtime. They also named the servers after the datacenter they were in. They moved to another state, in another timezone. It was a nightmare.

windows defaults to using localtime in bios, linux defaults to using utc in bios. it's not not keeping track of time, linux just changed the bios clock to what it wants, and windows assumed it was still in localtime.

there's a registry key you can edit on windows to fix this

For those interested in a comparison of the two different extensions and know when to use what.
Comparison infographic titled "localtime vs quarto-now — Two Quarto extensions, two different jobs." Two side-by-side cards summarise each extension: EllaKaye/localtime (blue) converts event times to the reader's local timezone in the browser using Lua, JavaScript, and client-side rendering, with the shortcode `{{< localtime 2026-04-01 15:00 CET >}}`; it works with HTML output only and requires Quarto >= 1.2.0. gadenbuie/quarto-now (orange) inserts the current render time or file last-modified date using Lua and server-side rendering, with shortcodes `{{< now >}}` and `{{< modified >}}`; it works with any output format and requires Quarto >= 1.4.0. A green "What they share" section notes both are Lua-based, support custom formatting, use Quarto shortcode syntax, and have zero open issues. Hay una movida bastante graciosa cuando pasas de ciertas distros de Linux a Windows* que provoca que el reloj de Win se desajuste y bueno, casi me quedo dos horas extra currando porque como no tengo reloj interno pensaba que eran las 6.

*CachyOS guarda la hora en UTC y Windows en localtime
