after looking at the policies of Long Island politicians, I have come to the conclusion that they are simply incapable of decent self-governance on housing and land use issues, and the state must force them to build dense housing near transit

This is bad. At least 9 county prosecutors in pro-Trump areas of Virginia have now openly declared that they won't enforce the assault weapons ban that the Dem state legislature recently passed.
It's a MAGA nullification movement.

I am fundamentally suspect of localism for madisonian reasons. I think localism mostly just ends up with fix majorities that immediately beeline to entrenchment, rent seeking, and fucking whoever is in the out group

Counterpoint: localism is wack, growth is good, and coastal blue cities have a moral duty to build new housing to accommodate people fleeing red state governance.
I disagree. The current residents should determine the nature of a city.

this has also really informed my strong antipathy towards hyper-localism because localism necessarily leads to small fixed majorities who can stomp on everyone not in the majority to their content, which is why localism is so often pernicious good ole boyism

'carpetbagger' originated in racist Southern politics, U.S. political localism is generally bad and shuts out a ton of talent - especially because more educated people tend to move around more! - and we should encourage good and smart candidates to drop into seats *more*.

this is great - note that there's still police, but they're now part of a larger, county-wide department. the extreme localism of US policing is a *huge* part of its corruption, especially when you get to stuff like sheriff's departments.
Camden had zero homicides this summer. City and county leaders credit the 2013 disbandment of its police department.
Violent crime is at a 50-year low.

this is great - note that there's still police, but they're now part of a larger, county-wide department. the extreme localism of US policing is a *huge* part of its corruption, especially when you get to stuff like sheriff's departments.
American candidate selection is incredibly poor in general, partially because America has very weak parties, extreme localism in elections, high financial barriers, and a growing political nihilism.
The role of chance and chutzpah in the process of who becomes a candidate for national public office is way too high. If you don’t want scandals derailing Democratic Party candidates in crucial elections, we need local parties proactively recruiting and promoting several good, vetted candidates.

To be clear, if this councillor has failed to submit a declaration of interests, he is in breach of the Localism Act 2011

I don't know where the Minnesota State Police stand on the current conflict but I do think we need to be careful not to conflate the two organizations. The Fraternal Order of Police is a right-wing, private lobbying organization. They do not speak directly for any state or local police unit.
