I grew up in Loisaida (never call it Alphabet City or East Village- colonizer names). It will always be the Pan Am building, the drive (FDR Drive), Taki 183 will always live on, there was a private bus line on Avenue B, and the 2nd Ave Deli used to be on 10th St (still the best deli, bar none).

This piece by Colson Whitehead is one of my favorite things ever written. I've shared it many times with folks over the years.

It was published two months after 9/11, and I believe it's one of the greatest things ever put to pen about grief, memory, and time.

I started building my New York on the uptown No. 1 train. My first city memory is of looking out a subway window as the train erupted from the tunnel on the way to 125th Street and palsied up onto the elevated tracks. It's the early 70's, so everything is filthy. Which means everything is still filthy, because that is my city and I'm sticking to it. I still call it the Pan Am Building, not out of affectation, but because that's what it is. For that new transplant from Des Moines, who is starting her first week of work at a Park Avenue South insurance firm, that colossus squatting over Grand Central is the Met Life Building, and for her it always will be. She is wrong, of course -- when I look up there, I clearly see the gigantic letters spelling out Pan Am, don't I? And of course I am wrong, in the eyes of the old-timers who maintain the myth that there was a time before Pan Am.

Portrait of Carlos Chino Garcia by Fly, 10/16/12. He is a Latino elder w/ curly gray hair and a beard in a plaid shirt and denim jacket. Fly surrounds the portrait w text. "I was 5 and I came as an immigrant based on my family looking for work. we first went to East Harlem and stayed with family. My parents got jobs in Chelsea. My father was a waiter and my mother was a seamstress. So we got a place in Chelsea and our backyard was connected to the Chelsea Hotel. In the late 50s, Puerto Ricans started moving out of Chelsea to the Bronx until the LES. We didn't use the word gentrification yet. We moved to LES in 1958 to the Housing Authority at Columbia and Rivington. I had got involved with a youth gang called the assassins when I was about 11 – territory wise our strength was on the west side from 14 all the way to 103. We are different divisions but in the LES we were just a small group. In 1964/65 we started becoming more politically active. We started organizing in Chelsea, Harlem, and LES. Organizing young people to stay out of gangs and off drugs. Heroin had become a major problem in our community since the 50s and we wanted to get people interested in other things to keep them away from drugs. We were dealing with issues that affected our community like drugs, education, housing. We got our members involved to help with these problems. I met Esther Ryan, Earnesto Martinez, Francis Golden, housing advocates who taught us about housing activism. At this time we were known as the "real great society." We found it was a complicated name for Latinos to pronounce so in 1971 we decided to change the name. We took the first initial of everyone who was at that meeting and created what is now known as CHARAS. It was Chino, Humberto, Angelo, Roy, Anthony, and Salvatore. In winter 1978/79 we moved into an abandoned school on E. 9. We called it El Bohio, the hut. We were there to 12/01. The city sold the building to a developer...We fought. Maybe someday we get it back.
