Did a little moongazing by the sea this evening.

Lived here since 1984. I relandscape every 10 years or so. This go round: Yarrow 'Paprika', Blue Scaveola, Agapanthus 'Storm Cloud', Lomandra 'Breeze', Mahonia 'Soft Caress', Podocarpus 'Icy Blue'. Not shown: Chinese Pistache tree and Leucadendron 'Safari Sunset'. Plus my 60 year old stone bench.

Lomandra preissii - Preiss' Mat Rush

This dioecious Lomandra species is currently in flower in the Perth Hills.

Its flowers aren’t showy so are easy to walk past without noticing, but a closer look shows the different female (L) and male (R) flowers.

So many flowers! Gotta love the tiny show that Lomandra put on! A purple form of #Lomandra preissii I believe, a wild swing of colour forms this species is recorded having from green to purple! Though L. purpurea is also found in the area but this looks more similar to L. preissii 🤔

I love our native Lomandra! The one is Lomandra sericea, the hairy leaves give them away! And the flowers, which for the most part are key for the ID. This is a widespread species and one of the many that have low growing spikes that don’t get higher than the leaves!

A suburban backyard with a corner garden bed. A big grassy root ball is lying on the lawn. Another related grass with finer leaves is still planted in the bed.

Lomandra are an examples of a dioecious plant! Male flowers are often the most show while the female flowers are less so this is quit prominently shown by this #Lomandra nigricans! First time coming accross female flowers of the species!

These are just such cute flowers! Lomandra suaveolens is a widespread local species to Perth and the southwest, and due to this flowering strategy probably many would never notice them! This may eventually be host to Cassytha glabella but for now I can enjoy these blooms!
