I know, I know, I bought a shitload of records on Friday. But then people gave me money for my birthday, and what else am I gonna spend it on? (Actually bought a very nice top as well). Treat yo self, innit.

The Thomas Speakman in the hall has a fault, so we had a swap round. Now the Thomas Baker of Blandford is next to the Belloni of Shaftesbury barometer. Around a century between them.

Clock repair done: an especially lovely old painted dial longcase, with a rolling moon. Perfect in every detail! The movement was caked in dust and oil, last run in the 1950s. What a pleasure to start it up again.

Cleaned and serviced this fine George III longcase clock. 8-day movement with a rather beautiful bell strike (the 5" bell has a defect but it's improved the tone with a little complexity). 😊

Here's a second hand for a longcase clock I polished and blued. Lots of carbon in the steel (one of the nicest I've done!).

One of the fun things about servicing lots of clocks is finding markings from repairers of the past. Longcase clocks need servicing every 20 years (ish) so generally they have been disassembled and reassembled maybe 10 to 15 times before I get them. The hand scribing can be quite fine 🧐
