Ah, Teenage Dirtbag... i have such fond memories of that song. The 3-man crew of a halibut longliner & i all belting it at the top of our lungs while setting the strings somewhere in Hecate Strait on a drop-dead gorgeous clear blue day in early summer. that trip was fun except for the demonic toilet

sometimes when the seas get big like that, it's much more dangerous to try and run downwind for safe harbour. so you have to turn into it & just steer into the oncoming waves. that's exactly what that guy did, by hand, all night long, in a 55-foot wooden longliner 🫡🫡
i've been in that scene from A Perfect Storm where the boat is climbing up the face of a giant wave. i was cowering in the foc's'le for it, but that's exactly how the skipper described it the next morning

Here is where I struggle with my job. I’m paid to help strengthen fishers' labour rights in countries with minimal resources to comply with FFA MHTCs. Today, we received a Korean Longliner, which has been 361 days at sea. There is no maximum time for crew legislated, so, is it legal, not ethical 🤬

Sometimes when I think about how useless my degree is wrt job prospects unless I pour more money into getting a PhD and then magically getting tenure and I start to wonder if they'd even give me a job on a longliner — I really put more of myself into my own character than I thought huh.

One thing I really enjoy about having a staff team that works (partly) remotely is all the different scenery we get on our team calls. The winner this week is definitely the person working from the deck of a longliner off the coast of Labrador!

off Haida Gwaii, working on a halibut longliner, a sperm whale followed us for several days. it was eating the shaken-off undersize sablefish. They follow sablefish trap boats up there, too - again, eating the undersize non-keepers.
