This charming little dragon at Weston Longville (Norfolk) marks more than decoration - it's part of the donor inscription on this magnificent late 1490s rood screen.
The Latin text reads "Ricardi Lyon qui hoc opus fieri fecit" - "Richard Lyon who caused this work to be made."

It was just me and the birdsong - and a magical sunrise over the Wrekin. I was standing 12 miles away on Wenlock Edge, watching as layers of mist drifted across the fields near Longville. A pale pink light filled the sky, turning the familiar landscape into something almost otherworldly. #Shropshire

The superb @hastingsdiesels.co.uk 9 car DEMU captured near Newton Longville on the East West route. This was, I think, the second "public" train to use the Bicester - Bletchley section. Tour was "The East West DEMU" from Hastings.

via Buildwas there was barely a hint of mist until I dropped down into Longville. Even then there were only a few wisps and I began to think my early start was all for nothing. However, I parked up and after a 20-minute walk I was confronted with this ethereal view. 2/3

Lyng had two medieval churches. As well as St Margaret there was St Edmund less than a mile away, just north of the road to Weston Longville. Not much remains. It seems too close to have been a chapel of ease, so possibly Lyng was a two-parish settlement? Though there's no houses out that way now.
