The LoreQuest Studio Toolset is looking so good! 👌

Now I have created the mechanics of the game, I am deep into building the tools that will allow me to write the interweaving storylines and branching player options.

And of course, it needs to be a beautiful place to work!

My 'weekend' work of creating the maps for LoreQuest is turning into a week of work! 🗺📌

Getting the navigation up and running has proven troublesome, but I'm nearly there! 🤞

So far I've created the full, detailed map in the inventory, with NPC markers...

Just finished a long implementation session to create and troubleshoot the new Lore Studio.

Not only will it allow me to create all the lore content for the game, it acts as my tool for world-building when writing the book series.

An eleventh-hour reprieve.

I was about to remove an early iteration of the new Sketch Board, as I thought I wouldn't need it.

A last-minute decision to keep it turned out to be correct.

This tool is SO useful! I've made the perfect brainstorming tool by mistake. 😄

Six books. Six LoreQuest game expansions releasing alongside each one, advancing the game story in parallel.

If you were playing a game tied to a novel series, would you play first and read after? Or the other way around?

The Timeline displays the game events in chronological order, the Sketch Board allows me to draft quests and scenes, and the Quest Navigator displays the interactions of scenes which have been written.

Three tools working together in the Studio Toolset.

A week of boring - but necessary feature additions to the LoreQuest Studio Toolset.

A full set of Backup Tools, a Restore from Trash pagem and a Restore from Backup fucntion.

Now that I'm writing story content, it's good to know it's safe!

Three screens. All at once. Flickering, then black.

I was about a week into building LoreQuest and had just convinced Chrome to crash every display in my studio.

New blog post: what happened, and where the game is heading.

Bit the bullet over the weekend and ditched the Divi wordpress visual page builder and went for custom posts to drive the LoreQuest game.

Should be so much more efficient, but I'm well out of my comfort zone! 😆

The first playable release will be the Prologue. A short story arc set inside the Red Temple.

An orphan with no name, no House, and no idea what they've walked into. A companion whose meaning won't be clear for a long time yet...

The game asks which companion you want. Two creatures. One choice. You must discover what that choice means...

New post on what LoreQuest actually is, and what the choice is for.

Part 3 of my LoreQuest game development blog.

"Why the Game Begins at the Bottom"

The game and the books are set in the same world, at the same time, but tell completely different stories. Why the game begins at the opposite end to the books.

So far, designing the LoreQuest game has been about discovering what is possible with Claude AI.

The game has grown immesurably in scope and ambition.

Today, I am biting the bullet and rebuilding the architecture so it can scale in the future.

A lot of untangling to do... 😆

Made some real headway in the LoreQuest game mechanics.

Actions have consequences now, driving a really interesting system of 4 key points rankings.

I won't spoil anything by saying what they are, but your decisions will affect how NPCs respond to you, and which quests open up.

Yesterday was a real landmark. 🥳
The Studio Toolset is now at a point where I can start work on authoring the gameplay.
I use the Sketch Board and Timeline to map out the story, then convert it into actual gameplay events.
Feels great to be back at the creative work!

The latest blog in my development series on the #LoreQuest game is out now.

Is it a game or is it a story - or both?

The LoreQuest development docs currently have 542 flags for bug fixes or improvements! 😱

As an author coding a game, the frustrating thing is that, until the game is built, it's hard to write the actual story! But that's just the way it goes.

It's been a long bug-fix week... 😄

Today, I'm working on the first, end-to-end quest as a test model for the LoreQuest game.

This will require me to build every element I need (dialogue panels, choice system, quest inventory).

Excited to have the story coming to life!

It's the little changes that make a big difference.

After a month of being in a tunnel, trying to finish the authoring tools for my game, the thing that brought it all together was a single design pass that created a history state function.

Milestone day in the game build! 🥳🎉

Today I have added my first quest with the new Scene Studio editor. 📝

Previously, all the quests were hard-coded, proof-of-concept ones. Now I have all the tools to create rich NPC interactions on my own!

Phew, what a gnarly few days!

Trying to get the collision system working for the crafting mini-game has been a nightmare! 😱

But, FINALLY managed it, and it looks great! 🥳🥳🥳

Had to get Claude to create a sandbox with values I could adjust to fine-tune everything.

I love the juxtaposition of handwriting all my game notes in ink, then getting Claude AI to transcribe them all and collate everything into working documents that I can then write handwritten notes about, and so on.

Seems like two different eras working together.

34 pages of game story notes all transcribed by Claude AI and output into a markdown doc.

Cross-referenced with my glossary notes to catch odd spellings amongst my awful handwriting!

Can't believe I used to have to copy all this out by hand! 🥳
