It’s certainly a funky tale - for the curious, here’s a 1 min. summary I did the audio for: m.youtube.com/watch?v=-4mn...

And no, I noticed no effects when consuming this particularly “chilled” lobster meat

And yes, I polished it off w/ a can of Moxie (shoutout to @WBStilwell, @allisonhorrocks, & my friends @LowellNPS)

Anyway, the new paper (awaiting peer review) is right up @IgNobel’s alley

This program was instrumental to my career path; it was how I was first published, made community connections that lead me to join the board of the @BreadRosesFest, and was an education I rely/relied upon daily working @TsongasIHC & @LowellNPS.

I will always love this particular spinning frame @LowellNPS; that doesn’t detract from the fact that if it was set this way during a work shift someone would be fired IMMEDIATELY

That’s no dig at the exhibit; I’ve actually used it as an object teaching lesson to great effect /2

I don’t have access to the images rn, but between Ballou’s & Gleason’s the 1850s in New England are well represented w/ some fantastic images

I’ve used many @LowellNPS

Urban industrial landscapes are a hidden forest; we often focus on the visible pollution, but forget the environmental investment required just to build them! @LowellNPS is a great place to learn about this:

Mini Talk: Deforestation and Lowell
Lowell may appear different from what you expect a National Park to look like. But the canyons of brick hide a dense forest; thousands of acres of trees cleared, cut, or burned to create this planned, urban industrial landscape.

If that tweet left you like “what?” A: buckle up ‘cause references to the industrial era are like half the content I post & B: get yourself to @LowellNPS

The talk was excellent, btw! @LowellNPS hosted a ranger from Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters, discussing how different members of the Appleton Family’s approached Abolition (Longfellow married Fanny Appleton) & their connection to Charles Sumner

Of course, you can do the same thing; get yourself a Lowell quarter & swing by the @LowellNPS! Just be sure to keep your quarter in your pocket & your hair pinned up when you check out the power looms...

There’s others, but I’d start with those. I can recommend further on the expanded subject of labor history (such as the Triangle Fire, etc.) including some great photo resources; otherwise, visit @LowellNPS,etc! /6

Compounding this is seasonal work; for example my dad used to work for the @NatlParkService (I did too, @LowellNPS), but we both lost our positions (he due to his “age,” me to budget cuts). Now he’s seasonal at a State Park, but that means during the winter he has no income. /5
