Praying it's systemic loxoscelism
Hi, spider expert here! Kyle Rittenhouse was bitten by a Brown Recluse (loxosceles reclusa). Unlike widow bites, recluse bites don't affect the nervous system. Instead, they are a cytotoxic venom, destroying local tissues at the site of the bite.. So how bad could this get? Well...

Recluse bites can turn into necrotic, open sores. Severe cases, known as systemic loxoscelism, can lead to kidney failure, seizures, and blood disorders. Here's to Kyle developing them all. Couldn't happen to a more deserving person.

No, that's local loxoscelism.

Systemic loxoscelism is when the venom gets into the blood.

The lethality of recluse bites is EXTREMELY overblown, out of all confirmed bites, only 15% develop /any/ kind of symptoms beyond a red spot on the bite site, and off that 15% only 5% develop Loxoscelism, the medical condition known for the necrotized wounds and in eleven rarer cases, organ failure

Loxoscelism can be life threatening. If he complained of chest pain after a suspected bite, an ECG makes sense. But he looks pretty damn good for someone with this condition so I’m skeptical. Bottom line though, I hope it hurts…a lot.

Brown recluse envenomation should be considered in children presenting with cellulitis & sepsis who subsequently develop #warmAIHA, as #HemolyticLoxoscelism can manifest with direct antiglobulin test positivity & mimic drug-induced pathology.

Horse paste and tea for a recluse bite, yeah, good luck with that one.

(If you are at all squeamish, please do NOT look up "loxoscelism", the primary necrotic condition caused by recluse bites. This is not reverse psychology, it is incredibly gross.)

There is a saying in medicine along the lines of “It’s never a spider bite!” Obviously sometimes it is, but it’s common for people to assume and it ends up just being another bug bite or a bacterial infection. With a recluse bite, systemic symptoms (loxoscelism) are rare but possible.

Successful Management of Intravascular Hemolysis Caused by Systemic Loxoscelism With Antivenom: A Case Report Abstract Spider bites, particularly from Loxosceles species, pose a public health concern in Mexico. A case of systemic loxoscelism in a 33-year-old woman who developed acute intravascular hemolysis is presented. The patient was successfully treated with blood transfusions and Reclusmyn, a Mexican antivenom. Her clinical and laboratory improvement supports the therapeutic value of antivenom in severe envenomation.
