LuaTeXは我慢ならないぐらい遅いので、本当にLuaTeXでないと困る用途以外では使っていない。自分の場合、英文の場合の第一選択肢はXeTeX、和文の場合はupLaTeX。

In practice we say "Tek" to refer to all the related variants (latex, xetex, luatex...). And the community is inconsistent about LAY-tek versus LAH-tek versus lah-TEK.

XeTeX/LuaTex: that goes in the "bewildering ecosystem/no best practices" thing, I didn't spend much time evaluating anything that wasn't "whatever MacPorts installed as part of its huge LaTeX package" because it felt overwhelming to replace parts or roll my own 1/

Whoever would've thought it would be so hard to compile a .tex file that has both Korean and Arabic? Korean requires xelatex, Arabic require luatex, aaaauuggggh! Time to try new fonts, AGAIN...

XeTex is what I used for my thesis in the main though I think people recommend LuaTeX over that now. XeTeX was written by my friend's father so I have a weird transferred loyalty to it.
