Ha, perhaps the only interesting question is why not all institutions do see themselves that way.
But perhaps you're right that it's time to visit Berger and Luckmann (not revisit, because, as is perhaps obvious, my background reading hasn't reached far past Hacking and Wendt).

I sometimes get the sense that reporters & even pundits don't understand that they are participating in the shaping of reality. Or they do but take some comfort in a "I am only a watcher/passive/my words carry no weight," when that thought becomes uncomfortable.
