Rather than worry about AI replacing all human connections, Storhaug Reinås thinks it can augment them. In healthcare there is so much demand for more complex care, it’s overwhelming, so if technology can help, we should use it. Mentions a lupus chatbot, LupusGPT, that answers patient questions.

A useful checklist from Gerd R. Burmester on how to avoid hallucinations in LLMs:
✅ Clear context
✅ Trusted sources
✅ Verified data
✅ “I don’t know” when needed

For #LupusGPT, we also added validation by doctors and patients to ensure accuracy, understandable language and the right tone.

At “AI vs The Doctor: (When) will AI replace the rheumatologist”, Gerd R. Burmester focused on hallucinations in LLMs in medicine.

LLMs are powerful, but fallible. #LupusGPT is designed to limit this risk through validated sources, low creativity, clear limits and no guessing.

A very useful checklist for ethical AI in rheumatology:

🔹Bias
🔹Privacy
🔹Transparency
🔹Human oversight
🔹Regulatory compliance
🔹Lifecycle monitoring.

These are the principles at the core of #LupusGPT, from validation to clear boundaries.

“Where does the data go?”

A crucial question in clinical AI, and one that sits at the heart of responsible patient-facing tools.

#LupusGPT was designed with privacy-conscious access, no login, clear safeguards and a validated document library.

Safety is also architecture.

“Can AI say I don’t know?”

This is exactly why #LupusGPT was designed with clear boundaries: when the answer is not in its validated library, it does not guess.

In patient information, safety is not only about answering. It is also about knowing when to say “I can’t answer”.

Thank you to Johannes Knitza for mentioning #LupusGPT as a precedent in the validation of AI tools in rheumatology.

High acceptance is important, but validation is what makes these tools credible, safer and useful for real-world patient information.

🦋 One more year, #LupusGPT is featured in the #EULAR2026 Highlights!

A free, multilingual AI information tool for lupus, co-designed by patients, clinicians & IT experts.

It uses a validated curated library, answers in patient-friendly language, and says when it doesn’t know.

🦋 AI in healthcare should not only be intelligent.

💡 It should be trustworthy, accessible and shaped together with patients.

👏 A powerful closing message from our Chair, Jeanette Andersen’s, at the #LupusGPT session at #EULAR2026.

Jeanette’s practical roadmap for responsible AI:

Start with trustworthy information, co-design with patients, HCPs and AI specialists, set ethical and security boundaries, focus on accessibility, then keep learning and improving.

🤝 Patient organisations already bring what responsible AI needs: trusted information, patient expertise, clinical networks, knowledge of unmet needs and multilingual communities.

🦋 This is why patient leadership matters in digital health.

👂 AI can also become a listening tool.

🦋 Jeanette shows that patients ask about fatigue, diet, pregnancy, sunlight, physiotherapy and flares.

💡 Patients define treatment as everything that helps them function and live well. #LupusGPT

📊 More than 65,000 questions answered across 189 countries since launch.

🌍 #LupusGPT is reaching far beyond Europe, including 39 low- and middle-income countries.

💡 Impact is also about what the tool teaches us.

#EULAR2026
June 6, 2026 at 10:03 AM
💡 One key feature of #LupusGPT: if the answer is not in its repository of validated lupus documents, it says so.

🦋 As Jeanette highlights, in patient information, safety is not only about answering questions. It is also knowing when not to answer.
