43 years ago today I travelled south overnight on the South Mail. Here's the Griffith-bound South Mail, by now sans sleeping car (which had been detached at Junee), and now hauled by a 48 class branchline Alco diesel, reversing out of the platform for a cross at Matong, NSW August 27 1983.

I have just learned that the modern Chinese term for toilet is 馬桶 (mǎtǒng) which literally means "horse bucket"

There had been a LOT of rain over previous days, and there was water lying all over the landscape. Here we are west of Matong - with the parallel road (and the km pegs) just above the waterline, 43 years ago today, August 27 1983

And here's the train we had to cross. The Griffith to Junee connection into the northbound Riverina XPT, run at this time by Budd diesel railcars, calls at Matong station as we wait in the loop, 43 years ago today, August 27 1983.

i taught a cram school ESL class in taiwan once where the previous english teacher had named the kids after famous greeks for some reason, and the boys mercilessly teased one kid named aristotle because they thought the last two syllables of his name sounded like toilet (mǎtǒng 馬桶) in mandarin.

So, the trip started the night before, in a sleeping berth on the South Mail. I don't have photos of that section of the trip, but I seem to recall we were tipped out of our beds at Junee and the sleeping car detached. The train then headed West towards Griffith. Here we are at Matong. (4)
