The “miracles” of the Japanese new religious movement Sukyo Mahikari are performed using the Mahikari treatment, in which a person is purified by the healing energy radiating from the palm. Only those ordained with an amulet, or omitama, can supposedly perform it.

Sukyo Mahikari has centers worldwide. They dabble in organic agriculture and boast numerous charity causes, and in 2013 claimed to have over one million adherents worldwide. The organization isn't all true light and harmony, however.

Takayama is a beautiful town mostly known for its well preserved old town, but it's also the home to the headquarters of the Sukyo Mahikari religion. I'm lacking context, but I couldn't help but feel its massive buildings towering over a relatively poor area of town were in poor taste
