Electric bike angle combined with Mamils. Nice thinking but 👎

I think this will be a real debate in the Conservative caucus. And you may be correct, that side seems likely to win out. Time to get organized and line up our most effective spokespeople. (Not MAMiLs) e.g. youtu.be/KHG-gdHuroA?...

In the hospitality industry here those coded guys often turn up together after a ride. We call them Mamils - middle aged men in Lycra

(And even MAMiLs have ordinary cloths and ordinary bicycles. We can dress them up like ordinary humans when the media is around.)

Unless you're one of those MAMILs who seeks out the loudest possible freehub. I'm not making it up; these people exist

If you know of any other dirtbag bike people on Bluesky, point me their way. Messengers/former messengers, bike commuters, middle-aged gravel riders (MAMILs, according to our detractors), or other people who love bikes but don't want to spend $4k on a frame. Holler.

schlechte, kontrastreicharme, graue Schrift auf weißem Hintergrund. Mamils haben altersbedingte Augenveränderungen...🤨

No offense to MAMILs (many of them are great) but "bike lanes in ravines" is the most MAMIL idea I've ever heard, after "everyone should just vehicular cycle"
October 23, 2026 at 2:04 AM
Da sie ja ("aus aerodynamischen Gründen") meist keine helltönende Glocke bei sich führen, höre ich die von hinten anrasenden, sich hetzenden Mamils ganz gerne schon früh🤪🤔😡...

"aS A cYcLiSt" is almost always followed by the most L of takes. Ugh. The only thing I hate more than carbrain are the MAMILs that only view cycling as a hobby & cant fathom it as a method of actual transport. Those screenshots actually made me a bit mad 🤣

Funny how bike lane haters blame MAMILs for bike lanes when MAMILs often prefer riding (fast) in the street with the car traffic.
October 15, 2026 at 1:23 PM
... Not that I'm implying all MAMILs are evil, or that they're the only bad cyclists.
October 15, 2026 at 2:35 PM
I'll believe when I see the MAMILs stopped going through red lights at speed...

🙄

When you say MMLs, be careful with the vowel application.
Definitely no MaMiLs.

The roads are overcome with MAMILs.

Don't confuse average cyclists with MAMILs. Just because they're louder doesn't mean they speak for all of us.

Mamils in the wild..

Round here Mamils have now become old people in Lycra. A group slowly passed me by in the High Street today. It’s a hilly area too.

I will say coming back from NYC, I’m very proud of the diversity of folks biking here in PDX.

When I was in NYC it felt like it was 95%:

tourists on citibikes
college kids on citibikes
deliveristas
MAMILs

The forces pushing back against separated infrastructure are *not* actually MAMILs taking the lane. It's the massively more influential powerful oil and gas and automobile lobbies. And some of those MAMILs are also working as volunteers on municipal advisory committees, pushing for better infra!

Went for a bike ride and pondered a fitness problem. If I am getting fitter, and I am, how come Apple Health says my cardio fitness is going down?

Back on my Bicycle
⏱️ 02:17 total (1:40 actual) ⇄28.9km ⌀17.2km/h ↗109m ↘?m At last, the weather was cool enough to go for a bike ride at a reasonable hour. I stopped early on at the still new park along the river for coffee and a bun to fortify me. There was a gaggle of cyclists already there, mostly MAMILs, and I was dead chuffed when one came over and asked if he could lift my bike. “Complimenti,” he said, then beckoned his friend over to guess how much it weighs. His friend was more interested in the suicide levers, not to mention the rim brakes, and then both repaired to their tricked out gravel bikes and rode off into town. Off I went, along my usual southerly route. It was all very familiar; the miscanthus and other grasses creeping slowly onto the cycle path, the sweet medicine of the eucalyptus trees, the feral cat encampments, the old horse stables. Some changes too, mostly the sharp smell lingering over the bits of scrub that had burned over the summer. The climb back home wasn’t as difficult as I expected after the long pause, but that raises another point. A few weeks back, after an extremely idle June and July, for a lark I thought I might restart the NHS Couch to 5k plan and see whether at my advanced age I could get myself jogging again. I could, but that’s not the point. Cardio Fitness is the point. Apple Health estimates it from heart rate and motion data, courtesy of the Watch. And to my great surprise, my cardio fitness has actually gone down from a peak of 29.8 in mid-June to 26.9 after yesterday’s jog. Somehow, in getting from barely being able to jog for 60 seconds to sustaining a 25 minute session, my cardio fitness has dropped. That makes no sense at all, so for now I am choosing to believe that the estimate is wrong. In that, I am not alone. Lots of people seem to have the same complaint, and one reason seems to be that Apple reduces the measure simply because you are older. I did have a birthday in June, but at least one chart gives a top age-range band from 66 to 100 years old. Maybe Apple has its own age bands, but it still seems rather odd that getting fitter has reduced its estimate of my cardio fitness. Most likely, Apple’s estimate is crap.

Makes one long for the time the MAMILs were featured in articles as the new masculiny / midlife crisis.
Nowadays, it seems midlife is about getting a shiny F150 for the weekly costco haul or driving (on usually plowed pavement) to local sky hill
