Tel Aviv is more or less its own thing culturally. It's the one remnant of the Mapai hegemony. It's secular and liberal and European-vibey, while everywhere else in the country actually feels like where it is (i.e. the Middle East). TLVers get very annoyed when people treat all Israel as like that.

Mapai kinda shot itself in the foot on that front. They really did nothing to make the left appealing to Mizraḥim.
They put all of their eggs in the “they’ll accept our superior culture!” so when Begin came up and said “what if you don’t accept their culture (and also do a fascism)” it fell apart
