A young British couple, Alexander Cromie and Marie Ebert, along with their Greek pilot, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos. The incident occurred on Monday, with the private helicopter crashing just metres from a landing pad. The couple, newlyweds celebrating their honeymoon, had taken the flight from the village of Markopoulo near Athens to the popular holiday destination. Greek police confirmed the deaths and are investigating the cause of the crash. The aircraft's scheduled landing time was 18:15 local time (16:15 GMT), with the crash happening shortly before this. Sifnos' Deputy Mayor, Manolis Foundoulakis, described the scene as leaving 'almost nothing left' of the aircraft, with locals reporting a 'bizarre engine noise' prior to the crash. Firefighters worked to extinguish a blaze that followed the incident, which was fully controlled by Monday evening. The UK Foreign Office, Greek authorities, and the aviation company are being contacted for further comments. Blackstone, Cromie's employer, expressed shock at the loss of life, highlighting the personal impact on the couple's loved ones. The crash site, near residential areas, raised concerns about aviation safety and emergency response protocols.

A British couple have died in a helicopter crash while travelling to the Greek island of Sifnos for their honeymoon. Marie Ebert, 30, and Alexander Cromie, 31, were travelling in a private air taxi from Markopoulo, near Athens, when the helicopter crashed as it approached a helipad at around 6pm local time on Monday (17 August). The couple, who lived in London, and the 55-year-old Greek pilot, Giorgos Raikos, were killed. CCTV footage revealed the Bell 206 helicopter began rotating erratically in the air before rapidly losing altitude, crashing to the ground and being engulfed in flames, as reported by the Daily Mail. It crashed in the Tholos area of Sifnos, a popular summer destination in the Cyclades island group. The pilot had reportedly radioed that he was preparing to land shortly before communication was lost. Local reports said the helicopter may have suffered a mechanical failure shortly before the crash, although the cause has not been confirmed. Greek authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. The UK Foreign Office said it was in contact with local authorities and was ready to provide consular support to those affected.

A wildfire has broken out, prompting a mobilization of the Fire Service. The operations center was informed of the fire at 16:30.
