Marsilius's argument that the supreme authority for interpreting disputed Scripture is a general council composed of clergy and laymen, convoked not by the pope but by the *legislator humanus fidelis* (the faithful human legislator), is set out at *Defensor.

the podcast did not dwell on this, but it grabbed me on this revisit to NRH. in these pages, it seems like LS is worried TA stresses the scare quotes in "'bad' means" too much. and the islamic & jewish streams in Marsilius too little. like a good Aristotelian, LS wants to find a happy medium.
