Also, Abeti Masikini performed at Carnegie Hall in 1974, after Miriam Makeba and Letta Mbulu! And she had an intriguing and expansive life that I don't know anything about. Maybe I'll be able to find the documentary Abeti Masikini: Le Combat d'Une Femme somewhere.
African Singer, Too, Got A Start in Church Choir. A black and white picture of Abeti Masikini with a wrap on her hair, sharp manicured eyebrows, and dangly earrings. Text in the article below: Another black singer has come into prominence from a start in her church's choir. The singer, Abeti Fina‐Masikini, however, did not begin in a Baptist gospel group, as have so many black American singers. Abeti, as she is billed, is from Africa. She began singing in the Sacred Heart choir in Kissangani, in Zaire, the central African nation formerly known as the Belgian Congo. The 22‐year‐old singer and her troupe of six accompanists and four dancers made their debut in Carnegie Hall Saturday night. She thus followed a small number of female African vocalists who have performed in this country—the two principal ones being Miriam Makeba and her protégée, Letta Mbulu, both South Africans. Miss Abeti sings popular and traditional village songs, in Swahili and Lingala, but she is accompanied by electric guitars and bass as well as modern and conga drums. During an interview with Miss Abeti and her manager, George Akueson of Togo, both defended the use of electric instruments instead of traditional African instruments. “The basic rhythm is African,” said Mr. Akueson, who speaks French, as does Miss Abeti. “But African young people are revolutionizing their music,” he said, “using electric guitars and bass. Her music is not purely folklore. It's a meeting of the traditional song with the modern instrument.” Text continued from previous picture. Mr. Akueson said he had. discovered Miss Abeti on Zairean television. Performing professionally since she was 16, she had gained a reputation in Kinshasa, the capital of Zaire. Her reputation expanded as she sang for her friends and neighbors on Kabalo Avenue, then on television, where she won fame as an imitator of other singers, and finally after her tour of several West African countries. Zaire, Mr. Akueson said, sets the pace in modern music, for many of its African neighbors because the nation's Belgian rulers had built a large transmitter in the country, making possible wide dissemination of music on radio. Since then, he added, Zaire got an early start In phonograph‐record production —Miss Abeti is on the Aziza label—and these have been widely distributed. Miss Abeti also recorded in Paris, on a Pierre Cardinproduced record, after she performed in the Paris Olympia Music Hall. In her temporary apartment at the Shelburne‐Murray Hill Apartment Hotel, Miss Abeti appeared personable and warm, patient under questioning. She said that her father was a retired civil servant who also painted and that her mother, now dead, also had sung in the church choir. Accompanying her for a number of years has been her brother, a youth of 18 who patterns his guitar technique after two Zairean musicians —Franco and Luambu Makiadi—and Jimi Hendrix. Following her Carnegie Hall performance, efforts are being made to take her on tour throughout the United States. Miss Abati, who has been in New York City since Feb. 23, said she had concluded that her home town of Kinshasa was so modern that she had not seen enough difference in New York to cause her to be “shocked.”

Two songs that are inextricably linked to my fieldwork are particularly relevant to this match: Congolese soukous singer Abeti Masikini's song Je suis fâchée was on someone's cell phone SIM card and we played it pretty much every time we were driving out of the forest.
