This survey is an absolute joke on every level. The survey design was bad, their methodology is haphazard, their sample is completely unrepresentative, and the results are worthless

The fact that this survey gets reported on as fact every year is actually super fucking damaging to workers in this industry. Legitimately very harmful.

Since this thread went viral, I want to follow-up my dire warnings with some helpful resources. I dug into my memory banks and asked some friends for recommendations

A drum I want to beat:
Overwork starts with management and planning, but half of why it happens is team culture.

Nobody has more impact on team culture than senior team members and lower-middle managers

If you are in the trenches and someone folks look to, then your example defines team culture

Game design thought:
I think almost every game above a certain scale would be improved by more negative space.

In pacing, in physical space, in vibes

I guess it's a gacha game. Despicable, disappointing

bsky.app/profile/maxn...
I literally do not think it is possible for a gacha game to be good. I think the business model is both fundamentally opposed to good design AND fundamentally immoral

So unless they like, manage to really silo that part off to the side as a totally separate thing... guess we'll see

Sometimes it gets really extreme, too

One case is Hidemaro Fujibayashi. He was the director of three Zelda games at Capcom.

He was later hited at Nintendo and directed Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom. He’s high up!

He has not mentioned the Capcom Zelda games he directed at all since joining Nintendo.

Half-formed thought:
Dedicated game devices will always be important. Not for any technical reason, but because of their power to frame the act of play.

Setting expectations and mindset are SO important to how players experience games. The context you play within is a huge chunk

This sobering quote from Akiman about the time some of the street fighter team visited the home of the president of Incredible Technologies, the subcontracted US studio that made the Street Fighter: The Movie game

Something I didn't really get into is the fact that trying to create the benefits of crunch without crunching can easily fall into a "just get rid of red tape" kinda trap. But the problem is, at big scales, the red tape is there for a REASON! And part of that reason is to protect downstream teams.

The outputs of their algorithms is also the output of their own aesthetic, built up over time with experience and iteration. It is not just "random content"; it is a distillation of the lessons that they have learned, and in turn articulated and taught to a machine.

Would it shock you to learn that most ISAIAH members also qualify as "Regular Workers"?

bsky.app/profile/maxn...
I watched some of the St. Paul City Council hearing on the increase in people's property taxes and the disagreement between regular workers and progressive activist groups was impossible to miss. Fred Melo summed it up in Pioneer Press: www.twincities.com/2024/12/03/s...

Silver lining: I can now brag about the AMAZING STUFF I GOT TO DO.

There was an policy of not publicly taking credit too much, since everything was the work of many.

_I_ don't think it's a zero-sum game. I did some really cool shit!
