I hope the Government will work with us to change an education system too focused on the university route and excluding far too many young people from school.

We need two equal routes at 14 - one academic, one technical - and our #MBacc achieves that. 🙌🏻

Neutral ground today was pretty gas.

It’s finally shorts weather

Got some good Beyblade deck testing in

And I dipped my toes into MBACC

Whenever I read "MBacc", I can't help but think about the idea of a Hanson endorsement of Golden Virginia.
After all the ongoing controversy following last week’s 14-16 reforms I thought I’d go back to 23/24 when Andy Burnham launched his MBacc. The announcements /documents are here: www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk/news/andy-bu...

Personally, I don’t know how you define this as Burnham’s first mistake. It’s been 2 weeks. Social care could be his big mistake. So could devolution (my head is spinning at the permutations of what the govt announced on Friday). The Mbacc is definitely untried, but let’s not have to have an opinion
New post just out:

"Burnham's first mistake"

Splitting 14 year olds into academic and vocational paths seems intuitive.

But it's a terrible idea that risks increasing inequality, and closing down options for the young people that need them most.

Burnham says the Manchester baccalaureate or MBacC could be replicated in other cities - an LBacC in Liverpool or a BBacC in Birmingham - with some tweaks to reflect local industries

UNI and MBACC are looking incredibly stacked this week. If you’re a UNI gamer or a Meltyhead in East Michigan you might want to think about taking a trip out tomorrow.

Word on the street is there’ll even be a DJ there.

Loved being part of this session with GMCA colleagues exploring how we best involve young people & families, in their diversity, to develop the #GreaterManchester Baccalaureate #MBacc.

And how we breakdown barriers to make MBacc pathways accessible, inclusive and equitable for all.

Proud to represent Manchester schools and @manchesteracademy.bsky.social in discussions between GMCA and the DFE, where it’s clear our region is leading the way on so many issues. @andyburnham.bsky.social MBACC initiative now being recognised as the direction of travel for many of our young people.

Given Burnham’s education reforms today - worth revisiting this on future of his MBacc (from earlier this year). Now need to build a vocational system at Levels 3, 4 & 5 that takes more young people and adults into growing sectors/jobs across England.

The Greater Manchester Combined Authority has an ambitious target to generate 1,000 additional T-Level placements as part of its Greater Manchester Baccalaureate (MBacc) offer.

We are delighted to be working with GMCA to pledge a new Hallé T-Level workplace placement from September 2025 👏

Yep - it was a starter for ten don’t worry - just wanted to explain the political and policy reasoning behind it before I got onto it’s relative strengths and weaknesses (see also Mbacc, which I’ve written about before). A lot of ppl won’t know there’s an agenda here at all

That's only a problem if the MBacc route is intrinsically less valuable than the academic route. The intention is that it wouldn't be – that it would have the same opportunities for depth and progression. Whether *that* is achievable is the big question.
August 2, 2026 at 10:17 PM
Couldn't agree more. We're seeing more and more of this in FE, with routes to employment cut off for students who haven't achieved the EBacc... But then get onto skills based courses, are good at them, but employers can't seem to look past the numbers.

Love the idea of the MBacc. Top work.
March 30, 2025 at 9:13 AM
Govt's announcement on vocational GCSEs is a bit hard to judge. They've not said how many of what kids will take.

SoS says today that this isn't about different routes for different kids... But that was the explicit rationale earlier in the summer, and for the MBacc?
September 24, 2026 at 6:22 AM
Are we sure the MBacc is untried? What actually *is* it?

Because everything I've read is all very WA1/2012 so far. Lots of strategy and legacy and community and sustainability.

But not entirely clear what the policy is. And what I think it might be if I fill in the gaps doesn't seem that new.

While I’m on this I also have to give him props for never letting me get away with criticism of his education policies. If I breathed a bad MBacc word on Twitter he’d pop up in my timeline and I’d get emails from his office offering to brief me as I ‘didn’t understand’. (I did, we just disagreed)…

I agree with Sam tbh, its a really blunt tool and schools in depraved areas will almost certainly favour putting borderline achievers (boys) through Mbacc rather than academic route as the risk of lower scores means theyll be penalised by Ofsted
