I believe the internet positively impacts democracy by allowing people to express different ideas and opinions. Through counterpublics and the public sphere, people communicate with diverse groups, create solutions, and help marginalized communities embrace their differences. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

I think the internet had a positive impact on democracy because it reduced gatekeeping, allowing people to express and share their ideas with a wider audience. The internet increased diversity and helped start grassroot activism, encouraging people to engage in social change. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

surveillance capitalism is violating an individuals 4th amendment rights. There shall be no forms of exception to study someones personal data or behavior through platform or devices. This gives the government the ability to harvest personal data to use it against users.

Section 230 should be abolished. Platforms must be liable to hide misleading content. Like Deepfakes which is digital editing to change a narrative. People can’t just post anything on social media expecting no repercussions. Like yelling “bomb” at the airport without trouble.

Music scenes have become a thing of the past. Streaming led to global access, aiding loss of geographic link and popular artists styles dominating. AI music contributes as these styles can be generation. The development of scenes became harder with much less influence.

The internet has been mostly positive for democracy, raising awareness of societal issues and uniting diverse cultures. However, the oligarchy has used it to create deep division, reversing its impact. Ultimately, it hasn't changed democracy itself but is a tool to divide us. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

The internet requires more regulation. Section 230 should be abolished because social media platforms have the power to control what is being posted by users. This won’t be detrimental to free speech because there are some things that shouldn’t be for just anyone to see. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

The gramophone was significant to US youth culture because music was made more accessible and became a new form of entertainment in the same way that gaming consoles have allowed gamers to befriend people with similar interests. This can be done through e-sports. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

I believe that surveillance capitalism is unethical, and dangerous to internet users. The data that is collected by companies can include sensitive information such as home addresses or credit card numbers, which if leaked can easily put users at risk.

Music scenes (grunge, west-coast rap, etc) are still thriving despite the recent shift from physical media to popular streaming services. Allowing for more control over the music they release and allowing bands to reach a broader audience through promotional content.

Streaming has helped local music scenes reach audiences far beyond their original spaces due to the internet. While music is less tied to specific places now, local scenes still exist and can use streaming to grow their influence and introduce their style to the world.

Local scenes are not the same as they were in the past. The shift from physical music to streaming has made music easier and faster to share, giving artists more exposure. People can now discover and access music through platforms like Apple Music and TikTok today. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

Streaming changed how we consume music. Local scenes like grunge and Motown thrived on regional community. Now algorithms dictate hits. It's harder for new artists to build a following when everyone hears the same playlist. It feels like access replaced local identity. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

The effect the internet has on democracy in the u.s. can be both negative and positive. The internet allows information to spread to a large number of people in a short amount of time, allows people to stay informed but information can still wrong or false easier. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

I agree because the internet helps communities connect, share ideas, and communicate their differences. However bias can create filter bubbles where people only see information that supports their views, making it harder to find different perspectives and accurate information #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

The internet has mainly had a positive effect on democracy because it allows people to have access to political information, current events, and allows people to share their opinions. However, the internet does have negative impacts such as misinformation being spread around.

Local music can still thrive, but streaming has changed how they grow. Artists used live shows and radio to build audiences. Radios and programming shaped what people heard. Streaming gives people access to more music without owning it, but local spaces still build community.

While I do agree the internet has given people more access to political information, I think the consequences outweigh the benefits. With the internet comes more misinformation and it creates more of a divide with the people.

Hey hyelawn, I like your point about reaching wider audiences. But I wonder if that global reach comes at the cost of what makes local scenes special. Do you think the shift from owning to accessing music makes it harder to maintain regional identity? #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME

I see what you mean. Streaming and popular music trends can make it harder for local artists to stand out. However, I don't think music scenes are completely a thing of the past. Local still give artists a chance to develop their own sound and connect with people.

I agree that streaming makes music much easier to discover and share. However, I think local scenes still need more than just exposure. Live shows and local spaces help artists connect with their communities and create a unique identity that streaming alone can't replace.

I agree because streaming services such as Spotify made music even more accessible, similar to the gramophone. They also let people easily access music and share it with others. Similarly to game consoles, streaming services have changed how people enjoy entertainment daily. #MEDIA180_F26_PRIMETIME
