As of 2013, the Caucasian Badger became recognized as it's own species of badger (Meles canescens). The species broke away from Meles meles between 2.37 million years ago to 450,000 years ago.

They don’t truly hibernate, instead they enter short periods of deep sleep and wake up regularly to forage.
