I listened to an interesting presentation by @cocochan.bsky.social on how they did this in part at MHCLG (shifting from P to in-house, carefully)

I think - politically - govt has set itself up to fail here. Planning sits in MHCLG, but that is also the dept responsible for communities. Somewhere in the new structure, there needs to be a digital social policy arc running between DCMS and MHCLG and tech policy needs to include communities

Steve Reed going to MHCLG - replacing Rayner's ministerial role.

H/T @jacktshaw.bsky.social for drawing my attention to this delightful exchange with the outgoing SoS in MHCLG.

This is good, via MHCLG:

Local authorities in England are now able to auction off leases for commercial properties that have been empty for long periods, helping bring business back to the high street.

High Street Rental Auctions will create a ‘right to rent’ for businesses and community groups

Chris Wormald - the balance sheet. In favour:
1. vastly experienced (much, much more than Case). Run two v big budget depts. also held senior role in what is now MHCLG; done time at the centre as head of EDS and heading Clegg office. former head of policy profession.

The moment that summed up the approach was the failed attempt to move Ed Miliband to MHCLG. Literally imagine going 'well, I don't agree with this guy's instincts on energy policy. What if we put him in the brief we think is central to our re-elect?'
Thats their entire problem their vision is opposite to what they are doing. So they piss people off on both ends cos Ed Miliband is some Zealot to the right but he still there so?????

This is really excellent - the creation of a register of 'options over land' will help show if developers are land banking, and allow communities and councils to better understand who controls land in their area.

Good work @matthewpennycookmp.bsky.social & MHCLG Land team!

Today, we’re introducing new rules to boost land market transparency.

This will allow communities to better understand what land is controlled and may come forward for development.

«"When given suitable resources the Civil Service can often outperform private companies like Palantir," the former government technology advisor said.

Eden added MHCLG had created a "better, easier to use, and cheaper" system.»
UK saves 'millions' of pounds by ditching Palantir for refugee system
The government said its in-house IT system was "more flexible" while meeting "high standards" of security.

Actually what, MHCLG?
The Guardian has covered the story that there's no mention of women's safety in new planning guidance, despite it being recommended in two major government reports in the last month. But this is what the Dept of Housing, Communities and Local Gov had to say.

Where's my pitchfork...

The government is today fulfilling a key recommendation from phase 2 of the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, to have all fire and building safety overseen by a single government department, bringing clarity and better accountability.

This will be done by fire moving from the Home Office to the DHCLG.
Responsibility for all fire functions moves to MHCLG
Greater clarity and accountability will be brought to fire and building safety from the transfer of Ministerial responsibility from the Home Office to MHCLG

RBKC and MHCLG among those to be looked at by CPS over possible Grenfell charges
RBKC and MHCLG have revealed that police files on them have been handed to the Crown Prosecution Service in relation to the Grenfell Tower fire.

If the Treasury is the Slytherin of government departments, then MHCLG, DSIT, HMRC, and DfT are the Hufflepuffs. FCDO is Ravenclaw.
August 31, 2025 at 7:55 PM
No, I think the internal cause is 'MHCLG believes in a measure of fiscal devolution, HMT doesn't, and because there is no overarching political project, instead of one department losing, they both just get to pursue their policy project despite them being contradictory'.

It's weird how satisfying it is that MHCLG has rebranded its Planning Super Squad as ATLAS 2.0

No commentary, this is just an appreciation post for my favourite infographic that MHCLG publish. It's just interesting.

DfE have settled today

So Home Office, MHCLG and Desnz still not (this actually feels relatively… good for a spending review a week out)
Even ministers like Ed Miliband who have been very angry with Darren Jones over potential cuts to warm homes will get eg big cash for nuclear. But still some v difficult cuts in day to day spending. DfE has a hard road ahead with teacher pay and eg breakfast clubs where schools say costs not covered
