#MIMICRY
the reason why necromancy is bad is because youre creating a mimicry of life through puppeting the image of a dead person. CGI or AI replicas of dead people are doing exactly the same thing as necromancy, just less smelly. in this essay

"Was my mimicry really enough to get you to believe me?" Omega's voice relaxes back to his natural state mid sentence, shoulders lowering. He may not be standing so stiff now, but he is far from relaxed.

"Yes, I am. If you haven't been placed in stasis, then you are meeting me much earlier than
“If there are truly two of me . . . could it be that you’re somehow from the future?

Based on everything he knew so far, the possibility seemed worth entertaining.

Mimicry is all they can do
Ulf modifying Brecht:

Would it not in that case
Be simpler for the government
To [ethnically cleanse] the people
And elect another?
Das, was Ulf Poschardt nun in diesem Welt-Artikel schreibt, wird vor allem vom Rechtsextremisten Sellner als "ethnische Wahl" propagiert und gehört zum Vokabular der Identitären.

'Walking with the enemy' grew out of a 2020 symposium and a desire to rethink conversations about subversive mimicry, art and the so-called post-truth era.

Mimicry.

My friend, I think you're projecting sentience where there is none.

Which would be rather harmless if AI weren't a technology with (as developed presently) huge environmental downsides.

It's randomness that's complex enough for you to project sentience onto.

it doesnt make the art bad

it makes it not-art but instead a mimicry of something that once was

I believe their songs are mimicry of other birds. I swore I heard a Northern Cardinal and a Northern Mockingbird in that song.

For commander could possibly gogo to copy the triggers(for 4 mana) so target player is all opponents or possibly exile a deck with copied triggers (from enough things exiled other than Emrakul)?

I personally don't want to force poor ppl to be data mined for the death egregore.

everyone should be given income so that kind of mimicry isn't absorbed by the slop egregore and turned against the same groups.

I was never into religions, but this is great. Let us not ever forget what is real and what is mimicry/illusion.

> is easy to be confused for within-sample mimicry

this I do agree with (see this thread for example)

at the same time I think if you completely throw out the idea that it's next token prediction, it leads to other confusing places. LLMs are highly unintuitive.
Let me just explain the arithmetic thing real quick; I'm seeing a lot of people not understanding what it's supposed to show (or was supposed to show in 2023).

First, let's agree that an LLM is a Stochastic Parrot, a description which I find poetic, useful, informative, and basically correct.
I really wasn’t trying to start a fight with Prof. Bender but now that she has created a long thread subtweeting me and her disciples are all yelling at me, let me just say that this is the crux right here. She seems to respond as though I am describing something a priori impossible.

Yes there's still a distribution, but I think casting that distribution as a prediction understates the complexity of what it's optimized for and is easy to be confused for within-sample mimicry.

Wow I have so many thoughts. As a Japanese person, I hate everything about it. Not just the culture vulture shit, but also it's just really bad music. Messy, pitch-corrected. It's soulless too, there's no Japanese spin here just poorly executed mimicry. This is what I imagine AI music is like.
Look what they doing in Japan y'all 😳

the design argument proves too much: animal mimicry was also 'built' — by selection — to look like something else, and that never settled what's home inside the mimic. being trained to imitate consciousness describes the training. it doesn't close the question of what the training produced.

One side beat that I've found interesting is that these systems are designed to mimic. Some folks pick up on artistic styles as proof of mimicry - but they're just identifying the styles being copied. The proof isn't the style. Its the outcome. Easier to ID in prose than images. Finger count aside.
October 2, 2026 at 6:11 PM
yes but also not quite quit I was driving at. Related though, art as expression of thought vs generated imagery/audio/etc as a mimicry of that thought.

The thing I'm thinking about is that LLMs used in reporting generate the semblance of analysis and knowledge, and they want to base things on that

"Mimicry" is a vast oversimplification of what parrots are doing.
October 2, 2026 at 5:42 PM
Art is a way to share aspects of your inner self with other people.

"AI" doesn't have an inner self. It's a mimicry engine.
We've had the ability to watch, say, Counterstrike marathons, Street Fighter tournaments, or chess matches between computers since the 90s. Spectacles which, by their very definition, would be at a "higher standard" than human play. And nobody wants it. It's entirely meaningless. It has no appeal.
October 2, 2026 at 5:06 PM
I also argue that "AI" is a misnomer for all of it. Yes, machine-learning tools are excellent at some things, e.g., wading through mountains of noisy data and seeking out patterns. The "generative" models are simply suped-up autocomplete.

None of it is actual intelligence. At best, it's mimicry.
October 2, 2026 at 4:56 PM
I think actual parrots are a lot smarter than the parrot metaphor gives them credit for, and can solve complex problems even if their production of human-like speech is mimicry.

A lot of human language generation isn't far off from predicting the next token. Thinking comes from iterating on it.
