Re-upping this thread, but like a month ago, #Melissa peaked in what is thought as a less favorable intereseasonal base state: Convective MJO envelope in maritime continent w/ suppression over NATL.

BUT as the new MJO forecasts show that is no longer the case. The DEC 25 & DEC 26 models now keeping the MJO in Phase 8 ,,, then Phase 1 and 2 for all of JAN 2025. PART 4

RaBa Leipzig hat seine Verbindlichkeiten in den letzten sechs Jahren mehr als verdreifacht: Von 136 auf 462 Mio. Euro. Zwar sind auch die Einnahmen gestiegen, aber nur im Transferbereich: Allein im Spielbetrieb sind die Einnahmen um 60 Mio. zurückgegangen.

Just to bring this point home, sharing a couple of figs from Klotzbach & Oliver (2015) showing how MJO phase influences TC activity in the NATL basin.
Favorable phases are 1-3, unfavorable are 5-7.
Well -- #Melissa reached peak intensity in MJO Phase 5 & this was a high MJO amplitude as well. 🤷♂️

La Niña has been steadily losing steam since the summer. The heightened MJO activity in the West Pacific (probably hastened by high solar to some degree) has taken its toll.
Another Pacific MJO event is coming later in December. This could eventually make things interesting out east.

La Niña has been steadily losing steam since the summer. The heightened MJO activity in the West Pacific (probably hastened by high solar to some degree) has taken its toll.

Based on current model guidance & longer term metrics I'll be surprised if lowland England see any snowfall this winter.
MJO is unfavourable (and likely to become increasingly so), AAM will likely fall off & La Nina trade winds will strengthen further dampening the MJO.

Based on current model guidance & longer term metrics I'll be surprised if lowland England see any snowfall this winter.
MJO is unfavourable (and likely to become increasingly so), AAM will likely fall off & La Nina trade winds will strengthen further dampening the MJO.

WHY THE DEC 21-22 S.E.C.S. possibility was never serious.
The MJO is on PHASE 6 and does not reach Phase 7 until 12/25. There is over 100 year of data shows MJO Phase 6 sucks for SECS #wxtwitter
