Simon Stellmer Receives ERC Proof of Concept Grant The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded Professor Simon Stellmer, a member of the ML4Q Excellence Cluster at the University of Bonn, a "Proof of Concept Grant" for his project "GyroRevolutionPlus." With €150,000 in funding over 18 months, Stellmer aims to prepare his groundbreaking quantum physics research for commercial applications. This marks his second success in the program, following a grant in 2023 for his earlier project "GyroRevolution." The innovative precision sensors developed by Stellmer's team improve the accuracy of ring laser gyroscopes, which measure subtle Earth movements and structural changes. These sensors hold potential for enhancing earthquake and landslide predictions and monitoring large structures like bridges and dams for minute shifts, ensuring stability and early intervention. Advancing High-Precision Rotation Sensors The project builds on quantum physics research, introducing new gyroscope technology with unparalleled sensitivity at low rotation rates. While traditional sensors like ring lasers have limits, Stellmer's team has created high-precision gyroscopes, including a four-by-four-meter model. The ERC funding will support the development of smaller, robust versions for practical use, including standardized deployment in boreholes to monitor ground movements. Two Consecutive ERC Grants Stellmer's achievements began with a 2017 ERC Starting Grant and progressed through the 2023 Proof of Concept grant, during which his team validated the technology, conducted market analysis, and filed patents. With the latest funding, the project aims to spin off as a startup, finalize commercialization, and identify business partners and market strategies. Sandra Speer, head of the Transfer Center enaCom, which supports the project, highlights its significance: "The practical applications of this innovative technology, from disaster prevention to structural safety, showcase its immense societal and market potential." enaCom provides scouting and advisory services to transition research into successful startups or spin-offs.
