This seems less a proton issue and more a Swiss Justice department issue. I'm not expert but if the MLAT is granted, proton must comply?

It is true that Proton is located in Switzerland and responded to a legal request from the Swiss authorities. But it is also true that most people do not know what an MLAT is and there is a widespread misunderstanding that using Proton will protect your account from US govt requests.
You are mistaken, we do not respond to legal requests from anywhere other than the Swiss authorities.
It is unlikely that one could build a business through ignoring the laws of the jurisdiction that it is in. The mail provider you're moving to included.

It is true that Proton is located in Switzerland and responded to a legal request from the Swiss authorities. But it is also true that most people do not know what an MLAT is and there is a widespread misunderstanding that using Proton will protect your account from US govt requests.

Which is the whole reason why MLAT exists. Lots of countries have cooperation treaties with the US, and Switzerland is one of them. The process for this is fairly simple.
1) Instead of applying to a US court for a US search warrant, the US LEA will submit an MLAT request internally.

Essentially, Proton should never see "legal requests" coming from anywhere other than Swiss authorities. Every other country would simply send their requests via MLAT, which would then be handled by swiss authorities.

Here is what I think (educated guess): I think there are new receivers for Mode-S in or around Ukraine. This would allow for greater MLAT coverage in the region. And would explain why suddenly we are seeing so many tracks over Ukraine today.

The brief also goes all out saying that this order should have been delivered under MLAT or Hague processes. MLAT is normal for cross-border *data disclosure* demands, I've never seen it used for content removal. 9/

OK, but this is a different treaty. I get it, but unless we withdraw from MLAT, this is the consequence -- and I don't see us withdrawing from MLAT any time soon.
