At the Ottoman State Archives, I first started thinking about how non-standard transliterations of foreign names can affect our research. Today, at the Greek Archaeological Service Archive, I found “Σχλίεμαν.” Can you guess whom it refers to? The picture might help… 👀

The impact of #war on #antiquities in the #Mediterranean has been an issue at least since the siege of the #Acropolis of Athens in the 1820s. The British issued this 'Antiquities Proclamation' in 1918 with regards to antiquities in what they called "Occupied Enemy Territory (South)."

The earliest #antiquities law I've found for #Morocco goes back to 1912. The latest one to be studied by #MMARe dates to 1945. The years in between mark a very productive period in the #HistoryOfArchaeology in this French protectorate.

💙Yesterday, severe thunderstorms and torrential rain hit Quebec City. Significant rainfall accumulations up to 50 mmare still expected by this evening. The long 19th c. was the century of legal codification! While #Mediterranean countries promulgated antiquities laws already in the late 18th c., #France (the country that pioneered the code & lent many of its codes to other countries) adopted its first heritage law in 1887. Interesting? #MSCA #MMARE

Another antiquities law adopted in the summer! At the very end of July 1912, the Ottomans adopted the Regulation regarding the Preservation of Monuments. More of a response to increasing pressure on heritage, this completed their protection regime for antiquities.
