After MMBN1 though not only do they earn the netbattling license they repeatedly prove throughout the rest of the series that they are a top netbattler for a reason. So some of these crimes are generally ignored and understood to be collateral damage in what is otherwise often official business.

It really is the hallmark of this medium that all our longest-running franchises have first entries that in retrospect could only have worked as vertical slice tech demos.

The main thing I remember about MMBN1 was how horrendous the power plant (hydro plant? It's been a while) level was, in spite of the fact that to my 10-year old self the plot was super-tense.

Baffling map design, horrendous balancing from start to finish, and so much time spent going from point A to B to C, and all the way to like M or N because the game needs to somehow keep you doing something, even if that something is just flipping switches.
