#MMBasic
we're so back

PicoMite, powered by MMBASIC, is like playing a good modern re-release of a classic game, the same stuff but with modern QoL

its 2025 and i am relearning BASIC, which i used a LOT from ages 6-18, be it GW, Q, TI or Apple

getting into the MMBASIC spec and i like it, it feels very modern while still being recognizably doofy ol BASIC

luckily MMBASIC is fairly c-like (specifically python-like) in its grammar, even if syntax is still often 80s style

New RP2350B board just dropped: really designed for MMBasic, but will likely do for MicroPython:

mostly i did:
- AppleBasic at little kid school
- GW-BASIC on the 8088 at home
- QBasic at big kid school and on the 486 at home
so there's stuff lighting up in my head, working with MMBASIC on the PicoMite firmware, that hasn't in a while

I have tackled the #BMP280 temperature/pressure #sensor on the #picoCalc. Byte level I2C programming (actually normal) in #MMBasic. 24 byte of calibration data and a lengthy calculation procedure included. And I have learned about weather service and actual air pressure:

whats extra fun about picomite/picocalc, and things like it, is that it can immediately and obviously interact with electronics using 3V signals (at i think up to 3A?)

this one just blinks an LED, kind of sort of a blinkenlight driver, knocked together in one minute

Und das ist wirklich fein gemacht: Das eingebaute MMBASIC im hat Support für Sachen wie I²C, SPI, OneWire etc eingebaut … und sogar für WS2812-LEDs (aka „NeoPixel“).

i screwed around with BASIC on it for a while, and it was fun, but i noticed the reasons we don't use it anymore- its real tedious to use, and, its bad at teaching object-oriented programming

still good for porting old classics! easier to rewrite in MMBASIC than anything else, for sure

MMBASIC (basic for small computers like the RP2040 driven Pico) has a lot of weird flaws- for one, it's not truly open source- but one thing that's cool is that I read a lot of complaints that LLMs are dogshit at it

it's obscure, and there are dozens of flavors of BASIC, they get real confused

All this @specnext.com news and KS3 Hullabaloo has inspired me to get back to my #ColourMaximite2 (which runs MMBasic at a blistering pace!) while I wait [for my worsening CC balance 😂🤦🏻‍♂️😢]...for the KS3 to arrive! 😎👍🏻

That really is a great article 👍🏻
Props for the ZX SpeccyNext Kickstarter (hope the next one goes well) 😍👍🏻😎
Also, you can buy the Colour Maximite 2 (2nd gen) from rictech.nz (New Zealand) for $115 and I think it's great 😎
Also worth mentioning is the PicoMite that runs MMBasic using the RP2040 etc 👍🏻
Great article covering the 8 bit revival and the machines out there. And the Spectrum Next is part of the show!
Get to know some of the "new" retro computers thank to this article: retrofun.pl/2024/04/08/n...

forget rust and go, mmbasic is the language of the future

Got my #Clockwork #PicoCalc kit yesterday. It's quite nice, quite a solid device. Gonna have to learn MMBASIC
March 14, 2026 at 3:18 PM
so this is fun, how MMBASIC interacts with modern tiny computers, with their exposed pinouts

wish i had been more exposed to this kind of thing when learning BASIC as a little kid! by the time i was doing stuff with devices, it was already abstracted out

It runs from a raspberry pi pico h. It comes with mmbasic flashed in it for writing code and interfacing with the GPIO pins. You can flash other softwares onto it such as pico-8 & Doom. Since it’s a coding language environment you can also use it as a calculator :)

I did wonder if it was going to be MMBasic. I have a Colour Maxmite 2 so that's great news 😊👍🏻
I've not really spent much time on the forums, just searched for what I needed at the time, so I didn't realise it was that bad! That is a shame🤦🏻‍♂️

Das beliebte und moderne MMBasic ist nun auch auf Pico2 verfügbar. Die hohe Leistung des Pico2 ermöglicht jetzt weitere Grafikmodi auf VGA und HDMI. #Maker

I've been doing the same. Learned to program in MSBASIC on a TRS-80 and made a career of it. MMBASIC is a fun throwback whether on a handheld PicoCalc or a super-fast CMM2.

There are already a number of Pico based boards with video out:

PicoVision (2040 based)
PicoSystem (2040 based handheld console)
PicoMite - runs MMBasic
PicoCalc

These are just off the top of my head 😎👍🏻

Just completed #AOC 2020 day 1 on a #ClockworkPi #PicoCalc using #MMBasic

The screen in real life is quite readable, unlike the mirror in the photo.
