Did you know that dogs in ancient Mesopotamia also refused to drop the ball?

According to a Sumerian proverb, “The dog understands ‘Take it!’ It does not understand ‘Put it down!’”

Here’s a Sumerian proverb on flatulence bsky.app/profile/moud...
Proverbs from ancient Mesopotamia are full of wisdom and humour. Keeping in mind that proverbs helped students practice the Sumerian language at school, it’s a reminder that teachers might have used humour to make lessons more memorable.

“Like a flatulent anus, the mouth produces too many words”

Here are some Sumerian proverbs on dogs bsky.app/profile/moud...
Proverbs written in Sumerian by young Babylonian students learning the (by then) dead language featured dogs in ways that suggests they were part of everyday life.

“Do not display hostility to a dog and it will not bite you”

“A sweet dog has become a puppy again”

And of course, NO TAKE ONLY THROW

For anyone wondering, some possible dog names have survived from cuneiform sources.

On tiny dog figurines found buried under a palace in Nineveh, Iraq are inscriptions that seem to be names.

dan rigiššu “loud is his bark”

munaššiku gārîšu “biter of his foe”

mušēṣi lemnūti “expeller of evil”

If you — like me — enjoy perusing very ancient instruction manuals, you may also like this thread about Assyrian glassmaking techniques known from cuneiform tablets bsky.app/profile/moud...
How to make glass in ancient Assyria.

First, you grind your ingredients separately, which can include certain kinds of stone, roasted carnelian-coloured seashells, “white plant”, and salicornia ashes.

Then, “You mix them together” and place them in a cold kiln with four openings

In the 20th century there were attempts - with very mixed results of course - to introduce accountability for this sort of atrocity. Now it feels like even that has gone. bsky.app/profile/moud...
There is death and wanton violence everywhere we look, there is unimaginable loss and fear, all thanks to a handful of men at the helm who have never had to answer for a single wrong.

If it looks like there are two different fonts on this clay tablet from ancient Babylon, that’s because there are.

In December of 603 BCE, a young scribe named Balāṭa made a faithful copy of a far more ancient inscription of Sîn-Kashid who had ruled Uruk over 1,000 years earlier.

Ashurbanipal thought makin a comeback tho bsky.app/profile/moud...
An ancient account of King Ashurbanipal, who ruled in the 600s BCE, boasts of his enemies' suffering. It does not sound too far removed from some of the boasts we hear today.

"They became like corpses. The faces of the people became gloomy like smoke (iqturū kīma qutri) with depression and grief."

And just like today, not everyone was great at math:

This is an incorrect calculation of the area of a triangle by a young Babylonian student at school around 1900-1600 BCE, excavated from the ancient city of Kish.

It’s a moment in the history of math, of education, of children, of mistakes, of people being people. I love it.

Additionally, 4th Cir. holds that the denial of medication for opioid withdrawal also violates an inmate's constitutional rights AND this too was clearly established law.

No QI for the prison officials involved in that part of the case.
