#MUDs
It's interesting how often the 'how to set up' part is the biggest hurdle to exploring something fascinating, especially with older tech like MUDs.

While I did somehow figure out MUDs, I can relate to the fomo because I couldn’t get Furcadia to work. I was sooo sour grapes about it, too lol “I’m not a furry! I don’t even have a Furcadia account!” *crying inside*

I always wanted to get into muds and mucks but as a 15 year old I simply just did not understand the technology or how to set any of that up haha. It always looked so fun.

When Maj started talking about the game mechanics, and they were all LITERALLY things I knew from playing MUDs, it felt so bizarre. And strangely nostalgic.

Then when he talked about how people acted like psychotic, raging assholes to each other... yeah, that stuff was very familiar too lol

Imagine my surprise, watching Majuular's Ultima retrospective series, learning about Ultima for the first time in my life, then learning that Ultima Online was *literally* built by people who built MUDs! To the point where before they were MMORPGs, they were GMUDs: Graphical MUDs! I had no idea. 🤯

I was really into playing MUDs with my online friends in the early 2000s. A MUD is like a chatroom that's also a game, heavily inspired by D&D, but easily modified.

The MUDs we played were very small & customized. It was a central hub of my online social life.

I've never played an MMORPG.

It's interesting that this sort of stuff never died - it continued in text adventures, MUDs, ZZT, Flash, RPG Maker, etc... They still thrive on itchio.

But the medium soon formalized into an industry, and these smaller, personal games didn't matter anymore... until they got commodified as "indie".

I was not alive for this time where games like Illarion online had hundreds of people participating in coups, or ultima online had swathes of people making every township and port alive with in character roleplay.

Or when MUDs were not full of forgotten accounts connecting from abandoned servers.

Played SinDome, GalaxyWeb, and a bit of Achaea. MUDs were so much more engaging and imagininative than the MMOs that descended from them.

ISU's stirring second half comeback fell short in Saturday's 31-17 Big 12 season-opening loss to No. 15 Utah.

One reason? "Obviously us not being able to tackle — at all — today led to this," head coach Jimmy Rogers said. #BlueCy

I grew up on Infocom games, and my first online communities were MUDs and MUCKs. I often dream in plaintext.

And yet somehow I accepted that episode as 'oh yeah everyone knows that, I'm just unique I guess.'

EverQuest is in there not entirely on its own merit, but because it was my first taste of graphical MMORPGs. I had played a few MUDs and the like, but EQ showed me what the concept could become. It's a genre I've loved ever since, even if it's kind of a dying one these days.
