So I bought and old PowerPC Mac.

2004 Powerbook G4, 1.33GHz, factory 512mb/80GB model.

I've never used MacPorts on my M1 before, I mainly use Homebrew but the only "equivalent" for that on 10.4 PPC is a mess so I was pointed to using MacPorts instead.

MacPorts compiles everything from source...

So far there were only 2 things that made my macbook fans go crazy:
- playing FF14
- making squeakross builds in unity

now I can add a 3rd one:

- installing GIMP via MacPorts

Switching from Home Brew to MacPorts, because of Intel deprecation. MacPorts is older, but the command `sudo port selfupdate` is obviously better than `brew update` (or was it `brew upgrade`, the difference never sticks). I don't mind the sudo…

fortran's still used in all sorts of things; MacPorts has 111 fortran-related packages in it currently

XeTeX/LuaTex: that goes in the "bewildering ecosystem/no best practices" thing, I didn't spend much time evaluating anything that wasn't "whatever MacPorts installed as part of its huge LaTeX package" because it felt overwhelming to replace parts or roll my own 1/

MacPorts and GCC still support them!

Homebrew specifically sucks for this, they barely test for anything past newest iirc. Consider macports instead mayhaps

Be thankful it's not MacPorts.

jank now has a health check, so you can troubleshoot any issues with your setup. This should come in handy as we add packages for Ubuntu, Arch, Nix, Homebrew, and MacPorts.

少々手こずったけどMacPortsのgnuplotのインストール完了。
FTGLのバグというのか,多分コンパイラの型チェックが厳密になったのかな。
同じ問題はすでに報告されてたようなので,そのうち修正されるでしょう。

Something also seen by @gnutools.bsky.social and MacPorts lately:
In one of the best things I've read this week, @mricon.kernel.social provides a deep dive on the infrastructure that is under pressure from bots and scrapers at The @linuxfoundation.org - specifically the #linux kernel's git repository.

m... macports? macports was old any dying back when I had a macbook, and that was like more than a decade ago! doesn't everyone use brew still?
May 8, 2025 at 11:53 PM
Not completely true. There is the macports collection (www.macports.org), and homebrew (brew.sh) for MacOS. If you are unfamiliar with these you should totally check them out!! They can even coexist…

(Homebrew and MacPorts for installing certain sorts of open source software, YMMV :) )

And I'm pleased to say that the computer runs much cooler and doesn't throttle much. Turns out OS 12 was more its speed than patched OS 15. I will miss a few niceties about the patched system. It was supported well by Homebrew for app and utility installations. I'm having to relearn MacPorts.
