I was sent this by its creator, Hector, who wrote to me to tell me about it (he used AI to translate his original French, which is why it reads like MachineSlop): “BreakFlow is a website and a connected machine where anyone can pay €1 to trigger, live, the irreversible destruction of a plaster cast — the negative of an everyday piece of consumer packaging. Ghosts of objects. The debris is selected, bagged, labeled with the participants’ names, and kept in the installation. The leftover scraps are cast into new “fragments of the real,” ready to be destroyed. BreakFlow loses money on purpose. Every euro, every cost and the residual debt are public, in real time, and the growing debt is, in a way, the value of the work. Each session is a different proposition, and the next one takes place on September 12th (2nd live session). I’m not after profitability, but if it finds its audience, BreakFlow will grow endlessly. As long as the public keeps buying, BreakFlow stays alive.” I LOVE THIS – pointless but also oddly-meaningful, persistent and futile and FOREVER…basically this feels to me like a spiritual cousin of Web Curios insofar as noone cares and it takes a lot more out of me than it gives back, and it will NEVER STOP (don’t worry, one day I will die and you will be free of these emails). Anyway, you can pay a Euro to be part of an artwork, and that feels like a reasonable return to me.
